Glitter Girl
Straight-A Berkeley student Kara Keough shares why she wanted to get a job.
Getting the job at Glitter Girl was a fun way to spend my summer. Sabrina has been such a strong influence in my life since I started working there. She reminds me of all the success I aim to achieve every time I think about how well she did for herself. She was in the Navy, the business world, and the classroom before she decided to do something for her own enjoyment and start up a boutique. She motivates me and constantly reminds me that a smart woman can do whatever she wants in life. She text messages me if I do well in school, or just to say hello.
I'm so grateful I walked into Glitter Girl and convinced her to let me work there. I saw such potential for the store to do better, and I love knowing that what Sabrina and I did to the store made it improve (even if it was just a little bit). It was so satisfying to make my own living the way other people do, instead of just living off my mom. It was nice to have my own money and responsibility. I got such a pleasure from saying, "I can't, I gotta work..." It sounds silly, but it was great. So once I got to Berkeley, I got another job quickly. Now I'm looking to become a waitress or server, so I can make a little tip money after a more positive semester at Berkeley — I got straight A's! It's such a good feeling knowing that I did that well. Now that I have a taste of my high school self back, with my good grades, I don't know if I'll be happy with a B+ ever again!
Happy holidays to all, and a happy New Year!
