Patton Oswalt Shares Personal Email From Anthony Bourdain With Essential Life Advice: "F--- Them..."
Patton Oswalt asked friend Anthony Bourdain for honeymoon recs — and got even more than he bargained for.
Add Patton Oswalt to the list of celebrities sharing memories of Anthony Bourdain — and his remembrance provides a unique glimpse into what it would have been like to count the Parts Unknown host as a friend and confidant.
The comedian, who has significant first-hand experience with grief after his wife's sudden death, shared a tweet showing an email exchange between himself and Bourdain. When the widower Oswalt re-married last fall, to Meredith Salenger, he reached out to Bourdain for advice on what to do in Paris during their honeymoon. And what he got in response was something much deeper than just restaurant recs — though he got that too.
Oswalt tweeted: “When @MeredthSalenger and I honeymooned in Paris, our friends & family put together lists of places to eat and things to do. Then I sent those lists to Anthony Bourdain for his input. This was his response. I love and miss him.”
In the return email that Patton shared, Bourdain wrote: “Patton, I’m a fan and an admirer so gotta tell you this is no way to enjoy Paris. F--- them. All of them. They’re THERE, everywhere. You will see them from the car window as you go and do important s--- like live your life. In Paris!”
After the philosophical life lesson, Bourdain continued with the practical tips: "Try and plan as little as possible. Le Comptoire is great. Amazing food and perfect atmosphere. Show early and squeeze into L'Avant Comptoire next door. Le Dome for shellfish tower. Rue Mouffetard for the market. And sandwiche jambon or fresh croissant anywhere at right time."
