Friends’ Ross Gellar Has a Doppelgänger Who Is Stealing Beer, And People Can’t Handle the Security Pics
Naturally, David Schwimmer himself had the perfect response.
It's been a good 14 years since Friends aired its last episode. Still, all its stars carry a certain cache, and we're pretty sure that anyone who appeared on the classic sitcom can afford a six-pack of beer... right? So imagine our shock when security footage from a store in England showed David Schwimmer, aka Ross Gellar, sneaking out with some stolen beer — or was it not the actor after all? Let's back up:
When police in Blackpool, England, put up an innocent-enough post looking for leads on a shoplifter, the internet went gangbusters. That's because the criminal in the video that police posted showed a man who looked suspiciously like Schwimmer, spiky black hair and all.
"Do you recognise this man?" the police department's post asked. "We want to speak to him in relation to a theft at a Blackpool restaurant on the 20th September. If you know who this is, please [contact us.]" Then, after several not-so-helpful leads, the police department actually had to write:
"Thank you to everyone for your speedy responses. We have investigated this matter thoroughly and have confirmed that David Schwimmer was in America on this date. We're so sorry it has to be this way."
That didn't stop the jokes from coming. One commenter responded, "I don't think it's been this guy's day, his week, his month or even his year," while another wrote, "Maybe he was here on a break?" But best of all, Schwimmer himself responded.
Posting a video of his own, the actor wrote, "Officers, I swear it wasn't me. As you can see, I was in New York. To the hardworking Blackpool Police, good luck with the investigation." And in the video ... well, just watch it:
We are so here for this.
