Bravo fans have been faithfully chanting lyrics from the Vanderpump Rules theme song since the show’s inaugural season in 2013. Fast-forward to over a decade later, and the iconic “Raise Your Glass” single by Memoir still lives rent-free in our minds.

On Season 10 of Vanderpump Rules, the series intro got a bit of a refresh, thanks to the showrunner Jeremiah Smith; however, there was one thing he didn’t want to change, and that was (you guessed it) the show’s opening theme song.

“When you hear that song, you immediately know what show is on TV. You immediately know [what] you’re in for,” Jeremiah told The Wrap about his decision not to reboot the song during a February 2023 interview.

He continued, “So we decided to keep that and just change up the visuals. I love the song.”

While it was a good call on Jeremiah’s part to keep the original melody, there are more surprising tidbits associated with the track, including how it came to be a hit and the songwriter not originally being a fan of the tune when she created it. Read on for details.

The Backstory of Vanderpump Rules’ Theme Song

The Vanderpump Rules theme song was written by former pop band Memoir, comprised of Dena Deadly, her ex-husband, Zed Kelley, and Dena’s brother, Matthew Remington Garner.

In a May 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, Dena Deadly opened up about how she and her former bandmates produced the now-famous song “Raise Your Glass.”

During the early aughts of the group’s career, they were asked by a music company to create an original number for commercial use, which they agreed on doing as a way to get their name exposed to the masses. Little did Memoir know that the catchy tune would become a staple in pop culture.

“I definitely neglected it for a lot of years because my standard was the Grammys… Now, I have nothing but humility and gratitude for it,” Dena told Rolling Stone how she felt about the theme song.

Memoir’s song got its first national run on Bravo in January 2013 when Vanderpump Rules Season 1 premiered, and the rest is history.

Three years later, the band performed their popular track in the Bravo Clubhouse while appearing on an April 2016 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

Speaking of performances, Grammy-award-winning artist John Legend even got in on the Vanderpump Rules theme song fun by doing his own soulful rendition of the jam in 2016, and Bravoholic Chrissy Teigen captured the adorable moment on camera.

Additionally, in January 2023, Vanderpump Rules cast member Tom Schwartz had the pleasure of meeting Matthew, one of the former members of Memoir. Taking to his Instagram to share the moment, Schwartz posted a photo with the musician at his and Tom Sandoval’s cocktail lounge, Schwartz and Sandy’s.

We had VPR royalty in the house [Schwartz and Sandys] not long ago,” Schwartz captioned his post. “[Matthew Remington Garner] wrote the theme song [Raise Your Glass] that his sister Dena sings. This tune is deeply embedded in my psyche.”

More recently, Schwartz took to his social media account to show Dena some love. On January 30, Schwartz shared a video featuring his castmates in honor of Vanderpump Rules’ Season 11 premiere.

Dena Deadly ‘Raise Your Glass’ is reverberating in my mind again…It’s like Mariah Carey on December 1st, embedded in our lives now forever,” he captioned the Instagram Reel. “Little [Vanderpump Rules] hype to start the day!”

You can hear the Vanderpump Rules theme song weekly by tuning into new episodes of Vanderpump Rules Season 11 on Tuesdays at 8/7c on Bravo. Stream episodes the next day on Peacock.
