Southern Charm Savannah's Nelson Lewis Addresses Questions About His Sexuality
"That’s never been something that I’ve ever had to deal with people thinking about me ever before," he said.
When you open yourself up to the world as the Southern Charm Savannah crew did this season, you're also bound to face chatter about every aspect of your life. Well, that's exactly what happened to Nelson Lewis, who said he encountered some questioning from fans about his sexuality.
Nelson addressed that speculation during a recent interview with The Daily Dish. "Well, I feel like I shouldn’t have to talk about it but, something I never, ever would have thought would’ve come up that, there’s been all this talk on the show, 'Oh my gosh, who thought Nelson was gay?' Well, I’m definitely not, and that’s never been something that I’ve ever had to deal with people thinking about me ever before," he said. "I’ve always liked women and dated some lovely people in my life."
In fact, Ashley also touched on this topic in the series premiere of Southern Charm Savannah. "Listen, in the South, there's a lot of eccentric men," she said. "But I have seen things that makes me know Nelson is not a homosexual."
Nelson also explained in that episode that, "Heterosexual WASPS like myself have always had kind of a flair for European women," referring to his girlfriend, Kat, who is originally from Ukraine. Unfortunately, after dating for a little more than a year, Nelson and Kat decided to call it quits. "I still have a lot of respect for her and very much loved her, but it just was not meant to be. And I think when you get to be in your mid-30s, if something is not — not that I want to get married next year — but, in fact, I think I’m kind of the opposite of a lot of people my age that want to just date forever and not get married, but if something’s not heading in that direction, why continue with it?" Nelson shared with The Daily Dish. "But she was a fabulous, Ukrainian delight, as I like to say."
These days, Nelson said that he is "slowly but surely" getting back into the dating game, which has been challenging as he splits his time between Savannah and Atlanta while launching the market research advisory company, Newsvesting LLC. "Sometimes, it’s tough to be in the dating world when you’re back-and-forth so much, but yep I am, I guess I am playing the field, so to speak," Nelson said. "It’s [the] typical story in life: The ones you like aren’t that interested in you, and the ones that are interested in you, you don’t like as much. You know, we always want what we can’t have."
