Shanell "Lady Luck" Jones Has Big Plans for Her "Exotic" Wedding to Somaya Reece
The #FirstFamilyofHipHop rapper breaks down what's in store for their nuptials.
Wedding bells will soon be ringing for Shanell "Lady Luck" Jones and Somaya Reece after the rapper popped the question to her love and asked her to marry her. And now that they are engaged, the First Family of Hip Hop rapper shared that they are really just trying to figure out how they want to get married.
"It's moving so fast," Lady Luck told The Daily Dish. "We're just enjoying each other. We haven't set any dates. We're still doing investigations and studying to see different ceremonies 'cause I don't want to do anything traditional 'cause I don't want anybody in anybody's religion coming to attack me. I want to do a different type of ceremony."
Different isn't the only way Lady Luck described the upcoming nuptials. "Also I want to do something exotic on an island, a nice beach wedding or a beach commitment. I don't like using the 'W' word, so a beach commitment," she said. "So we're really not rushing right now. We're just focused on our projects. We're focused on our label. We have so much that we're focused on, we're not really rushing for that."
Lady Luck may be taking it slow to their walk down the aisle, but she has long wanted to make Somaya her one and only. "The funny thing about it is I've had a crush on Somaya forever. I asked her to marry me on Instagram back in 2013, 2014," she recalled. "It's still on my page. So what has changed? No, nothing's really changed except that everyday we grow together and we love each other and we get to learn a lot together. I don't think that changed anything. It was just to let each other know that we're serious and I wanted to let her know that she can't date anybody else. So that's why I got her the ring."
When The Daily Dish spoke to the couple earlier this season, Somaya and Lady Luck spoke about being a gay couple in the hip hop community. The rapper addressed how she became more comfortable with being open about her sexuality in a genre that doesn't always embrace homosexuality with open arms. "I had to wait for the world to catch up because I wasn't outward with my sexuality but I've dressed the same forever," she explained. "And people sort of knew. If you didn't... well, [Somaya] didn't know. I don't know how. But back then, it wasn't accepted. And it was harder for me to do my music because a lot of people they said I didn't have an image. I was being me. I've never known how to be anything but me. And it's just so incredible that the world has finally caught up."
All seriousness aside, the couple does have a sense of humor about the rather heavy topic. "I don't like titles. I just like being Shanell," she joked. "I like being Shanell and Shanell just happens to like girls."
Her future Mrs. had her own sassy take on their relationship. "You got Jay and Bey. You have gay and gay," Somaya laughed.
