See Which RHONJ Cast Member Was a "Grunge" Girl in the '90s
The New Jersey 'Wives were "so excited" to talk about their love for '90s girl groups SWV and XSCAPE, as well as reminisce on their '90s fashion.
The ‘90s were all the rage, and thankfully for us, they are making a huge comeback — and so are the legendary R&B artists in SWV and XSCAPE. Both girl groups graced the decade with their incredible R&B tunes, now featured in the limited series SWV & XSCAPE: The Queens of R&B.
And we’re not the only ones excited to see them back in the spotlight.
Fellow Bravolebrities from The Real Housewives of New Jersey recently joined the conversation on all the things we loved about the 1990s, reflecting on fashion, dance, and what it was like living through both girl groups as they helped define an era — even though Housewife Jennifer Aydin might have skipped the party.
“My brother was a DJ, and all he DJ’d was freestyle music, and I was like a groupie,” Jennifer told The Daily Dish. “That’s why I skipped the R&B era.”
“Who the hell skips the R&B era?” wondered Danielle Cabral.
“Someone who has a brother who’s a DJ,” Jennifer responded.
But the Jersey 'Wives were delighted to see SWV and XSCAPE unite for the series, which follows the singers (and their drama) as they prepare for a one-night-only event.
Singing along to SWV’s hit single “You’re the One,” Melissa Gorga told The Daily Dish, “I love SWV,” enjoying the throwback as she snapped her fingers and grooved in the seat of her interview.
“I grew up to them,” Melissa reminisced. “Like I was young, but I had older sisters, so all that music I had on my boombox. It was very ‘90s.”
RHONJ friends Jennifer Fessler — who admitted to wearing Boss University sweatshirts and leggings in the ‘90s — and Jackie Goldschneider also relished the comeback of both superstar groups.
“You take me back,” Jennifer Fessler told The Daily Dish.
SWV, the multiplatinum trio consisting of Tamara “Taj” Johnson, Leanne “Lelee” Lyons, and Cheryl “Coko” Gamble, and XSCAPE, featuring sisters LaTocha Scott-Bivens and Tamika Scott, Tameka “Tiny” Harris, and The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s own Kandi Burruss, helped shape the ‘90s, not just for their immense talent, but also because of their signature R&B dance moves.
Dolores Catania, who said she wore bomber jackets and was part of a graffiti club back in the day, was asked if she could replicate some of the women's dance moves.
“I can’t even walk these days,” she joked, which had Teresa Giudice laughing.
Dolores, Melissa, and Rachel Fuda mimicked some of the moves from SWV and XSCAPE while seated for their interviews. However, Jennifer Aydin and Danielle took it a step further, rising from their seats to showcase their versions of the running man.

“We are really not making ourselves look good here,” said Danielle.
“OK, this was not me,” said Margaret Josephs while trying to nail down the movements. “I like it. I can appreciate it. But, I mean, I was giving birth in the ‘90s.”
While describing their fashion vibes from the decade, Teresa had a specific outfit in mind.
“A white off-the-shoulder shirt with turquoise leggings and white pumps,” she remembered.
Danielle recalled, being so young that she wore “big bows” and “puffy sleeves,” though Jennifer Aydin spoke fondly of Z Cavaricci pants, Big Johns, and Farlows.
Returning to the topic of music, Jackie said her music tastes have changed over the years.
“I more so like ‘90s R&B now as an adult, as, like, a mom in my car, than I did in the ‘90s,” she said. Instead, she was more of a “grunge girl,” which surprised Jennifer Fessler.
It didn’t seem to matter which bandwagons the housewives jumped on 20 to 30 years ago; all were excited about SWV and XSCAPE bringing their talent back into our lives.
“I’m so excited they’re going to be on Bravo,” said Melissa. “That means I’m going to have more chance of meeting them.”
New weekly episodes of SWV & XSCAPE: The Queens of R&B air Sundays at 8/7c on Bravo and will be available to stream the next day on Peacock.
You can also catch up on The Real Housewives of New Jersey on the Bravo app as Season 13 continues on Bravo Tuesdays at 9/8c and the next day on Peacock.
