The fashion designer passed away at the age of 39.
Fashion designer and former Project Runway contestant Mychael Knight has passed away. He was 39.
Knight died Tuesday morning outside of Atlanta. “We are still processing the untimely death of our son, brother, friend, and uncle. Mychael meant everything to us and we loved him dearly," the Knight family shared in a statement to OBVIOUS Magazine, which broke the news of his passing. "He was generous and so full of life. This is how we choose to remember his legacy.”
An official cause of death has not yet been released, but he chronicled his five-year-long battle with irritable bowl syndrome in posts on Facebook that have since been deleted, according to the Associated Press. Knight reportedly recently checked into the hospital seeking treatment for intestinal issues, according to TMZ.
Knight appeared on Season 3 of Project Runway where he placed fourth in the overall competition and won that season's Fan Favorite award. The designer also participated in the special one-off competition Project Runway: All-Star Challenge in 2009 and was a contestant on Season 3 of Project Runway All Stars in 2013.
The designer introduced his label, Mychael Knight, on BET's Rip the Runway in 2007. He also designed a line of custom tees for Starbucks. Knight would go on to launch a female and male lingerie label called Kitty & Dick and a unisex fragrance called MajK in 2008. He continued to debut new lines throughout the rest of the career with his final collection being his Spring/Summer 2018 line.
Andy Cohen paid tribute to Knight on Twitter Tuesday. "I am so sad to hear about Mychael Knight," he tweeted. "When he appeared on #ProjectRunway he was the sweetest guy, full of life, ambition & talent. #rip."
Knight also appeared on The Real Housewives of Atlanta to give Shereé Whitfield some advice on breaking into the fashion industry with her She by Shereé line. Recalling that Season 1 moment, Andy remembered Knight as "a straight out sweetheart."
