10 Movie Stars Who You Might Not Know Are Also Amazing Dancers
These celebs can seriously get down.
World of Dance will bring together the best dancers on the planet to see whose moves reign supreme in NBC's dazzling, new competition series. In order to do so, World of Dance has assembled an expert panel of judges, including Jennifer Lopez, who is also serving as an executive producer, NE-YO, Derek Hough, and Jenna Dewan Tatum.
But of course, these superstars don't just know how to dance; they've dominated the worlds of movies and music, too. And they're not the only mutitalented ones in Hollywood. Many other movie stars have wowed us with their smooth moves on stage, on screen, and pretty much anywhere else dancing can be done.
1. Channing Tatum
OK, so by now we're probably all well aware that Channing Tatum is a phenomenal dancer, having brought his sultry dance moves to Step Up opposite his then-future wife, Jenna, the Magic Mike films, and a thrilling dance routine in Hail, Caesar!. But Channing has long been a dancer before he made it big as a movie star, even stripping in an all-male revue like his Magic Mike character in the past. Let's not forget when Channing got a thumbs up for his Beyoncé moves from Queen Bey herself on Lip Sync Battle. We definitely hope we haven't seen the last of Channing's dancing.
2. Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling made us swoon channeling Gene Kelly as he did his own dancing in La La Land. But the Academy Award nominee has been busting a move from way back, as evidenced by that viral video of him dancing as a kid — in MC Hammer pants, no less. That clip is delightfully cringeworthy, but it does go to show you that this actor was born to be a dancer.
3. Kate Hudson
Kate Hudson proved she's got more than acting chops in her repertoire with big song-and-dance numbers in the film adaptation of Nine and Glee. Well, when your mom, Goldie Hawn, is known for shaking her stuff on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, you can't expect the apple to fall too far from the tree, can you? In fact, Kate has been dancing since she was a kid, and she revealed earlier this month on Instagram that she's "trying to get my dancing legs back for a little project." We can't wait to see what Kate's working on.
4. Tom Hiddleston
Tom Hiddleston has made it known that he likes to boogie, whether it's at an event or on a talk show — and he's actually quite good! Tom and Taylor Swift even grabbed headlines with their dance-off at the Met Gala in 2016 before they became an item. This actor's dancing clearly just adds to his charm.
5. Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron was all about ballet as a teen, dancing for eight hours a day at her arts high school, she told POPSUGAR Entertainment in 2011. The Oscar winner put on her boogie shoes once again when she shared a lovely dance with Channing at the 2013 Academy Awards. We'd love to see more of this side of the actress.
6. Cuba Gooding Jr.
Cuba Gooding Jr. certainly knows how to captivate audiences with his acting, but did you also know that he can steal the spotlight with his dance moves? The Academy Award winner is a talented breakdancer, having brought his b-boy skills to Lionel Richie's performance at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Before then, Cuba and his crew, the Majestic Visual Break Dancers, performed on the streets and at their local Boys and Girls Club in the early '80s, he told ABC News in 2016. And yes, Cuba can still breakdance today.
7. Christina Applegate
Christina Applegate may be known for her TV and film work, but she's always been a dancer, having danced regularly until the age of 27, according to New York Magazine. The actress would go on to earn a Tony nomination in 2005 for slaying the dance-heavy role of Charity Hope Valentine in the 2005 Broadway revival of Sweet Charity. More recently, Christina showed off her skills while hosting Saturday Night Live in 2012.
8. Christopher Walken
Before becoming one of the most iconic actors of our time, Christopher Walken trained as a musical theater dancer. He has done some dancing in many of his movies, including Catch Me If You Can, Hairspray, and Pennies from Heaven. Of course, his most famous dance break was in Fatboy Slim's music video for "Weapon of Choice."
9. Zoe Saldana
Zoe Saldana is one of the fiercest actresses around these days, kicking butt in movies like Star Trek and Guardians of the Galaxy. But she grew up wanting to be a ballerina. All of that training came in handy when Zoe starred in her first movie, Center Stage, as rebellious ballet dancer Eva. It's still one of our fave Zoe movies.
10. Penelope Cruz
Penelope Cruz was also a budding ballerina as a kid and through her teens. Even though learning ballet was physically excruciating work, it prepared Penelope for her future role in Nine. "I wouldn't have been able to do that number had it not been for my dance background," she told British GQ in 2014. "At the end of filming my hands were swollen with blisters - but I loved them, they became my trophies."
