During Part 2 of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City reunion on January 29, Mary Cosby provided an update on her son, Robert Cosby Jr., following the challenges they'd revealed during Season 5.
After Andy Cohen referenced the "immeasurable" impact Mary and Robert Jr. sharing his story had on viewers, Mary said she felt the "outpouring of love," and that her "mission" to help others had been accomplished.
As she explained, the moving conversation between herself and Robert Jr. was set to happen, but there was no plan for how it could go. As mother and son, they agreed that if he could share his "struggles" in a way that would "help one person," then the family would "tell [their] truth" exactly as it was.
While Mary is proud that the conversation with her son resonated with many viewers, she was shocked by Robert Jr.'s openness in the moment. "I didn't expect him to say all of that," she shared. "I didn't know that he was doing all of that, and the fact that I was unaware scared me because, you know, he lives in my house. We're so close."
Later in the conversation, Mary, Andy, and several cast members began to cry as Mary discussed the heartbreaking moment Robert Jr. told her he felt "like a stain."
"He's everything," Mary said through tears. "He was telling me his true feelings. When he said that, I wanted to take everything in me to convince him otherwise. You are beautiful, you're smart, intelligent, he's worthy, you know? I want him to believe that."
Mary Cosby reveals how Robert Jr. is doing after leaving his rehab program
Following Robert Jr.'s appearance on the show, he chose to enter a 30-day rehab program with his parents' support.
"He wanted to go," Mary said on the reunion episode. "The way he was telling me and opening up to me, that was a cry [for] help. That was saying, 'Mom, help me. I'm drowning.'" Adding that Robert Jr. felt he didn't fully understand what he was going through at the time, Mary noted, "Whatever it was, he wanted to change."
"What's been life like after rehab?" asked Andy.
After a deep breath, Mary emphatically said, "Good."
"I still worry," she continued, adding that her son is "more home-bodied" than he used to be, but that keeps him away from negative influences amidst his recovery.
However, she confirmed that he has a newer social circle, one that includes "emotional support" from friends he's made in sober spaces.
Where is Mary Cosby's son Robert Jr. now?
During an episode of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City After Show, Mary told Angie Katsanevas that it was important for her son to be "away from all the triggers" in Salt Lake City during his recovery.
As a result, he's currently living with his father, Mary's husband Robert Sr., in the family's Las Vegas home.
Why wasn't Mary Cosby's husband Robert Sr. on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Season 5?
During Part 1 of the reunion, Andy noted, "Mary, we didn't see Robert Sr. this season," and asked her why her husband chose not to appear on the show.
"Well, obvious reasons." Mary joked, explaining, "He does not want to be a part of this."
Her comment earned sympathetic laughs from the group.
She continued, "He's happy, and he's good with his life, and he wants nothing interrupted."
