LuAnn Admires George Clooney for Getting Arrested
The A-lister went behind bars to shed light on the Sudanese humanitarian crisis.
George Clooney gets a new girlfriend? Barely worth blinking an eye. George Clooney gets arrested outside the Sudanese embassy in Washington, D.C.? That'll make your head turn.
"George Clooney has been an outspoken advocate for peace in Sudan for many years," The Real Housewives of New York City's LuAnn de Lesseps writes in her weekly column for OK! Magazine. "He knew that his arrest in front of the Sudanese embassy would generate a flurry of press interest, which would in turn bring more awareness to the tragic conditions in Sudan."
And that it did. The 50-year-old A-list actor, along with his father, were part of a staged protest against Sudan's president Omar al-Bashir blocking crucial food and humanitarian efforts. After refusing to obey authorities' repeated warnings to leave, USA Today reports George stated, "This is for the government in Khartoum to stop randomly killing its own innocent men, women and children. Stop raping them and stop starving them. That's all we ask."
This marked The Descendants actor's first time in the slammer, and LuAnn strongly approves of the silver fox's rebellious streak. "I admire George's commitment to the Sudanese people and I respect his willingness to get arrested for the cause," she says.
