Kelsey Grammer Remembers TV Dad John Mahoney
The duo starred together on Frasier for 11 seasons.
In the wake of the sad news that Frasier dad, John Mahoney, passed away on Sunday (February 4) at the age of 77, his longtime TV son, Kelsey Grammer, is remembering his small-screen pop in a statement to Variety. He told the publication that “he was my father. I loved him.”
His is one of many tributes to the beloved actor, who, in addition to his role on Frasier on which he played retired cop Martin Crane, also appeared in films such as “Say Anything,” “The Broken Hearts Club," and "Moonstruck." Fellow Frasier co-star Peri Gilpin also paid homage to Mahoney on Twitter. "John singing at my wedding. Watch Moonstruck, Say Anything and/or Frasier or anything you can with him in it and raise a glass to John. Remember him well," she wrote.
His death was confirmed by Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where Mahoney was a longtime ensemble member. At the time, Mahoney had been in hospice care "due to complications from cancer." Camille Grammer, who, in addition to being married to Kelsey while he was still on the sitcom, also appeared on an episode of Frasier, paid her respects to Mahoney. She wrote on Twitter, "I'm heartbroken by this news. John was a wonderful and talented man."
