Harold Dieterle to Shutter NYC Restaurants
The #TopChef alum is set to close two NYC eateries.
Top Chef Season 1 winner Harold Dieterle just announced that he will shutter his remaining two New York City eateries, Kin Shop and Perilla, by year's end. According to Eater, Kin Shop will close its doors by Thanksgiving, while Perilla is expected to close by early December. "The cost of doing business in New York is going up and up and up, and our sales haven't continued to go up to keep that in line. It's been very frustrating," he said about the decision. As for his impact in the culinary world, he had this to say, "I'm really proud of what we've done. It's all kind of run its course. It's gotten to the point where I'm not having fun and enjoying myself. I'm not saying I never want to return to the restaurant business, but right now, I'm feeling a little beat up and a little tired."
"I feel happy that the restaurants were fairly well respected; it was a great run," he continued. "The mom and pop model is very difficult in the changing economics of New York City...great neighborhood restaurants become forgotten at times when everyone's racing to the new hot spot."
The move comes a year after he closed The Marrow last October. However, Harold will soon begin a new chapter in his life. He and his wife are expecting their first child in February. He also is mulling over a few other options in the hospitality world. "I'd like to maybe do some consulting work and perhaps eventually get into a fast casual concept. But I don't really know," he said. "I'm kind of figuring it all out." We're definitely excited to see what's next for Harold (who you can catch cooking some spicy duck meatballs, above).
The new season of Top Chef will kick off on December 2. Catch a preview below.
