Avril Lavigne Is the Latest Celeb to Get Wrapped Up in a Bizarre Lookalike Conspiracy Theory
Is that Avril or are we all being duped?
One of the cruelest and most common tricks the Internet likes to play is convincing everyone that a beloved celebrity has died. The next step is convincing people that the celebrity who has died has been replaced by a lookalike, which is exactly what online tricksters did to Avril Lavigne this week. The theory laid out on Twitter was that early in her career, Avril hired a lookalike named Melissa Vandella to work as a distraction for the paparazzi, and Melissa eventually took over for Avril completely:
This rumor is actually based on a Brazilian blog post, according to BuzzFeed. It’s been surfacing and resurfacing every few years, with someone alleging that Avril died by suicide in the early 2000s and that Melissa stepped into her brand as easily as a pair of shoes.
People are rightfully mocking the whole theory by posting pictures of themselves a few years apart, saying they’ve been replaced by a lookalike:
But some folks are still being taken in, because people love wild lies on the Internet:
If it is true, even Avril’s mom is a part of the con:
Or does she not know?!
