Angelo Sosa Teams Up With Angie Martinez for New Book

When radio personality Angie Martinez needed a helping hand to put together a cookbook, she called upon former Top Chef Cheftestant Angelo Sosa. Together, the duo whipped up Healthy Latin Eating, which is out now

So how did Angie end up working with Angelo? It turns out she had been a fan of cooking his for years.

"I had at this point already been talking to so many people about the notion of doing this project," she tells Latina. "Then I meant Angelo. When he was introduced to me he had already released a cookbook that I loved—it was beautiful and classy—and we clicked and vibed right away."

They have more in common than just food. "He's like me. He's third generation, so he learned from his family," she says. "He has the same love for the culture but also is from a new generation, and we just connected and vibed from that place. I told him about the idea for the book and he got it right away."

From there, the duo went to work on Healthy Latin Eating, combining their knowledge of the foods they grew up on. "The first time we met he spewed off at least ten different ways to do this and that, and I was like 'Thank you!'" she recalls. "And so I took all of my recipes and I crumpled them up in a ball and threw them away. I kept the couple that I really feel; I had a low calorie cookie that I do every year for my family. I left that in, plus a few other things."

But, she notes, Angelo helped put his spin on the recipes that made the final cut. "Some of them are mine, but a lot of the ones that are mine [Angelo] also kind of looked at and helped me with," she said. "He made suggestions like 'Why don't you try this instead of that?' So he kind of put an eye on those [recipes] for me. I trust him."
