Au Naturel
Rosie comments on this week's crazy request and the recent SNL sketch.
OK, my lovelies, I know you had all been waiting for the "au naturel" on a horse scene and wondering just how I was going to let a pregnant lady get naked on a horse! You must know me better by now to know I would have never let her get on a horse nine months pregnant (even if she had tried to bribe me with a martini, or better yet diamonds), but the nakedness happened post delivery.
What is interesting about Nicole is that she had perhaps the most outlandish request of all, but one of the most endearing stories. She was simply terrified about becoming a mom and really, when one thinks about it, who isn't? I know I grapple with the anxiety daily, wanting to be the very best mum I can be. For Nicole, she needed to realize that the very skills and warmth she displayed towards animals were the exact same skills that would help her become a great mother. She decided that having a painting of her on her childhood horse with her baby was the perfect reminder that she could do this, and that she could tap into those same skills she has with animals to help raise her child (obviously this is not all she was going to need, but it was the confidence booster she yearned for never-the-less).
I think some anxiety is good as it keeps us on our toes, constantly pushing us to examine our parenting skills and get better. Too much, however, can strip you of the ability to be in the moment with your children, and trust me, you don't want to waste a single moment. Complacency on the other hand is what worries me as a maternity concierge, and I try my very best to snap any future mums-to-be out of it.
On another note, did you all see the Pregnant in Heels skit on Saturday Night Live? Being made fun of truly felt amazing, such an honor, and I hope you all got a good chuckle too. Apparently my accent is all kinds of crazy!
