Mariah Carey Says Her Marriage to Tommy Mottola at Age 20 Was Not Unlike Being a Prisoner
Mariah Carey shudders as she looks back on her time as a "child bride."
Mariah Carey has been very loose-lipped about her love life lately. Recently, she told Cosmopolitan exactly how many people she's been with, in the Biblical sense.
“I haven’t had that many, but there has been a variety pack,” she confessed. “I’ve only been with five people in my life, so I’m kind of a prude, honestly, compared to most others in the field."
She also went in depth about how she feels now about her first marriage to her former record label boss Tommy Mottola (who has deemed it "wrong and inappropriate" in retrospect), and it ain't pretty.
“You might want to picture a child bride,” she said of the eight-year union in the interview. “There was a conscious effort to keep me as this all-American, whatever that means, girl. It was very controlled. There was no freedom for me as a human being. It was almost like being a prisoner.”
According to PEOPLE, Mottola expressed remorse in his memoir, writing he is “truly sorry for any discomfort or pain that all of my good intentions inevitably caused her, and most of all for the scars it left on my two oldest children [Sabrina Sakaë Mottola Sodi and Matthew Alejandro Mottola Sodi],” who he had after his split with the singer.
