10 Very Good Excuses to Break Fashion's Lamest Rule
No white after Labor Day...? You're not the boss of me.
You know that rule about not wearing black after Memorial Day? Oh, wait ... you’ve never heard of it…? That’s probably because it doesn’t exist. And why would it? Everyone knows that black works perfectly well as a wardrobe neutral all summer long — yet somehow we don’t have the same all-inclusive attitude toward the neutral at the other end of the spectrum.
Turns out, that no-white-after-labor-day rule does have a very practical foundation in ... exactly nothing. Nothing! No one even knows who came up with it in the first place or why they wanted to be the boss of us. It’s one of those totally arbitrary guidelines that does nothing more than limit our options. A real shame since white is so universally flattering that it looks great on pretty much everyone.
So let’s forget about that crackpot rule. It never existed. Our proof: the cosy sweaters, milky-framed sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hats that every beloved label you can name has in stores for fall right now.
