The Story Behind Those Bubble Dresses

After seeing the over-the-top engagement party in this week's episode of Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce, we had to know the inspiration behind it. We went straight to the source--Costume Designer Cynthia Summers--to find out how she came up with the "bubble dresses" we see in the background.

"So the theme of the wedding shower that Phoebe throws for Delia is a champagne…everything," says Summers. "Bubbles everywhere. Marti [Noxon, the show's creator] had really wanted something sexy and special for the waitresses, so we researched and found the Rolling Stone cover that Lady Gaga did."

"We pursued the creator of the Gaga outfit, Michael Schmidt, with little hope that we would be able to afford them and to get the outfits made in seven days and have them in Vancouver in time to shoot! As luck would have it, I was pitching the idea to Lisa [Edelstein], and she’s like, 'I know the artist!' Turns out they are close friends, and he was thrilled to revisit this look and make it for our show. He worked like mad, and we got to camera in time.  I have no doubt that if it weren’t for Lisa, the bubble costumes would have never materialized!"
