Are you ready to throw your money down on a big splurge for your home, but not sure which direction to go in (and which to avoid)? Design makeover savants Thom Filicia and Carson Kressley are here for you, boo. In fact, they’re helping people across the country transform their living space into something fabulous with their new show, Get a Room with Carson and Thom (tune into the premiere tonight at 9/8c!). So before you shell out next month’s rent on that fancy gilded stuffed peacock you’ve had your eye on, you may want to take a minute to hear what our decor gurus have to say about splurging.

How to Watch

“The home decor items that are worth splurging on are the anchor pieces for every room,” said Thom. “The sofa for the living room, the dining table for the dining room, the bed in the bedroom.”

“Think of your room as a great outfit,” added Carson, “and your investment pieces, like the sofa, for example, in your living room, that’s the anchor of that space. Those should be classics — think little black dress, think classic blue blazer, spend money there.”

Once you have your anchor pieces set, then you can have fun swapping out accessories to suit your taste.

“Get your basic classic pieces and then have fun by changing up your throw pillows, things that you just look at that are kind of eye candy,” advised Carson. “You can get inexpensive artwork, it doesn’t have to be pedigreed, you can get inexpensive tchotkes — a great example is some vases or decorative items. You may find them at the flea market, spray them all white, and you have an instant collection for, like, a dollar each!”

So, it's best to hold off on that peacock ... for now. Get more tips of the design trade on Get a Room on Fridays at 9/8c!
