If Christos' Shoes Fit...
Christos Garkinos was destined to live among high heels.
I love a great pair of shoes. Who doesn't? I have about 100 pairs or so--including some red-heeled versions from Mr. Louboutin himself.
I started the our shoe event about four years ago as a fundraiser for the No on 8 campaign which was fighting for marriage rights for gays and lesbians in California. All the shoes were $88.88 for a day, and we raised a ton of money for the campaign. Hundreds of ladies showed up, and a new event was born.
The next time we started with the $150 shoe event, girls camped out overnight! It was insane. I think it is like fashion crack It was pretty awesome seeing customers getting into their first pair of Louboutins, and Manolos.
The idea is that it gets new customers in, so they get to experience Decades and come back again.
I actually believe I found my calling in fashion because of a shoe. I was in 4th grade playing outside at recess at Ferry Elementary in Grosse Pointe. I heard the clickity clack of a high heel pair of shoes coming from a high school girl walking outside the playground. I turned and remember thinking, "Someday I am going to be around that sound all the time." It felt so grown-up. So big city. So gay. Party of one.
So when the shoe fits. It really does.
