Ryan Serhant Makes Toronto Film Fest Debut
Find out what critics are saying about his role in 'While We're Young.'
Ryan Serhant is ready for his close-up!
Over the weekend, The Million Dollar Listing New York star headed up to the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of director Noah Baumbach's While We're Young. Why? Well, in between closing deals, he also managed to squeeze in some time to star in the film.
Ryan is in good company in While We We're Young. It also stars Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Horowitz (aka Beastie Boys rapper Ad-Rock), Amanda Seyfried and "Girls" actor Adam Driver. Not too shabby. And much like in his real life, he plays a business guy, this time a hedge fund manager named Dave.
Reviews from Film School Rejects and the Huffington Post have been positive for his performance. "But if Horovitz is a subtle marvel, Serhant is the movie equivalent of street construction on a quiet morning, the Huffington Post wrote of his role in the film, adding, "Serhant is so good at being a bro, someone should probably cast him in the Entourage movie."
"Words can't even describe how incredible it is to work with such talented (and smoking hot) Amanda Seyfried and Naomi Watts. Backstage before introducing our film While We're Young. #WWY #WhileWe'reYoung #TIFF2014 @mingey," he wrote on Instagram.
In addition to posting snapshots from the premiere, Ryan also waxed poetic about the premiere. He opened up about acting again and also his relationship with his father, which he has talked about on MDLNY in the past.
Ryan previously dabbled in modeling (well, hand modeling) and has appeared in several short films. He also played Evan Walsh on As the World Turns from 2007 to 2008.
"In 1986, my Dad went to his last movie in a movie theatre. I was 2. A few years later he made me a promise that the next time he would ever go to the movies would be if I were in one. Last night my Dad came with me to Toronto to make good on his promise and go to my first movie premiere, and his first outing to the movies in nearly 30 years. He watched as Noah Baumbach introduced me to the audience and told the crowd my day job is as the top broker of New York City and that if they were looking to buy or sell, they should contact me," he wrote.
He continued, "He watched as the audience laughed so hard in my scenes that they couldn't hear most of the dialogue. And after the screening he pushed past Ben Stiller, Adam Driver, Naomi Watts, Amanda Seyfried, and my Mom, to tell me how proud he was. My road to the movies was not the normal one. I left the acting business to get into real estate, only to find my way back to TV via MDLNY and now onto the big screen. And while my career path seems far from normal, to me it was the only road to take. You see, I knew who I wanted to be when I was 4 years old. I just didn't know how to get to that person. I didn't know I needed to fall in love with the real estate business and build one of top producing teams in the country. But I knew that if I stayed positive - if I worked hard - if I seized every opportunity - then everything I ever wanted would come true, and it has."
He added, "Typing this is a surreal experience for me. I can only say thank you to my parents for believing in me, thank you to my Emilia for standing by me (I know I drive you crazy), thank you to Noah for taking a risk and casting me, thank you to Darren Bettencourt for getting me here (seriously), and thank you to everyone reading this for following my journey. I'm just getting started."
