So, What's up with Shamari DeVoe Having Her Outfits Approved by Her Husband?
Wait, is this Real Housewives of Atlanta 'Wife asking permission or getting fashion advice?
To quote Shamari DeVoe herself: "I could give a rat's ass what they or anybody else thinks about my style. Shamari DeVoe wears what Shamari DeVoe wants... not for the pleasure of others."
But should that really be Shamari DeVoe wears what Ronnie DeVoe wants? The Real Housewives of Atlanta mom did just admit that her husband approves all her outfits beforehand. (Wait, what?) Yup, she told Porsha Williams (see the After Show clip above) that Ronnie had to approve her risqué outfit for her burlesque show, and it doesn't stop there. He approved what she is wearing in that very clip, and yays or nays her outfits on the daily.
So, is that a bit controlling?
Shamari insists no. "I just want to make sure, you know, I’m respectful of my marriage and my husband and I don’t want him to feel like I’m showing too much cleavage and him to feel uncomfortable," she said, adding that it's not so much his permission she's looking for, it's more his fashion sense. "He’s got a great fashion sense … he doesn’t want me to have too much cleavage, likes me to be sexy but appropriate ... not raunchy. I’m a married woman."
"But when one partner has to (or chooses to) ask the other for approval, there are elements of power and control in the relationship," according to New York City-based therapist Liz Lasky.
"In a healthy relationship, there is an equal division of power and each partner is able to make choices for him or herself," she added. "Is Shamari's relationship controlling? I don't know. But, I hope she feels safe and empowered to make her own decisions, especially about something as personal as her own clothes and how she wants to look."
To be honest, it sounds like Shamari is really just making sure her fashion choices aren't too much — or too little — and just trusts her husband's fashion sense.
