A Nutella Sale Caused a Riot in France, and the Video Footage Is a Guilty Pleasure
What would YOU do for discounted sweets?
There's a Nutella Cafe in Chicago, Nutella-flavored lip gloss on the Internet ... and now, there's Nutella-spurned anarchy in France. It's hard to imagine that the makers of the chocolate-hazelnut spread had anything but pure intentions when they decided to offer their beloved product at 70 percent off. Little did they know... the promotion would cause riots, black eyes, and neighbors turning against neighbors in the rush to stock up on that sweet, discounted goo.
In the end, though, that's how things went down. Once the slashed-price Nutella hit shelves, a primal need for chocolate was unleashed in shoppers — shoppers who are, in their everyday life, quite stoic, we assume — and the merde hit the fan.
Video footage from various news channels shows the ravenous chocolate-seekers in action, and it's just as alarming as anything that happens at a Justin Bieber pop-up shop. Brace yourself and behold the below. We are all that French woman who keeps murmuring in alarm: "c'est pas normal," as her fellow countrymen and women run wild.
Then there's this video, which makes us think the Nutella jars were filled with Bitcoins.
Should we tell these people that Nutella goes for $2.59 at Target? But in the end, who are we to judge. Chocolate plus discounts is a dangerous recipe, indeed. And frankly, we're not above taking a shiner for some Nutella if it came to that.
