Pink Had an Epic Clapback For a Twitter Troll ... and Other Super Bowl 2018 Highlights
Plus, Justin Timberlake's performance spawned memes and — surprise! — The Eagles cinched the big game.
It's not easy to sing the National Anthem on any given day. You try scaling those octaves! But, toss in freezing weather (which is notoriously hard on the voice — right, Mariah?) and the flu, and belting about shining seas is an incredibly daunting task.
Pink found herself in that exact situation on February 4, when she took to the field of U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis to help kick off the 2018 Super Bowl with a soaring rendition of the patriotic song. Naturally, because she has superhuman pipes, the pop star nailed it. But, apparently not everyone saw it that way.
One less-than-kind Twitter user took to the platform to express his disdain for Pink's performance, as well as for Pink in general. The upshot of the mean tweet? "Pink sucks."
The singer was quick to reply to the ungracious comment. "Yeah, but at least I suck while singing our [country's] national anthem, and you just suck by yourself on a dirty couch," Pink wrote. Burn!
Of course, Pink wasn't the only performer to appear at the big game. Justin Timberlake headlined the buzzy halftime show, delivering a medley that sampled hits like "SexyBack" and "Can't Stop the Feeling." Timberlake's famous friends were quick to praise his upbeat performance, and celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres and Jimmy Fallon gave the singer some social-media love.
But perhaps the most widely circulated reaction to the performance was a meme of an unknowing teenager. As JT gamely circulated through the crowd, taking selfies with fans, one young man was caught scrolling through his cell phone as the singer stood mere centimeters away. Cue this instantly classic meme:
The evening's other highlights — because there was some football, too — included a surprise win by the Philadelphia Eagles. When the "underdog" team beat the notoriously skilled New England Patriots, celebrities such as Bradley Cooper (who was at the game) were quick to cheer them on. And, there was plenty of virtual cheering on social media, as well.
Will Smith recorded a hilarious video of himself doing a celebratory dance:
Nick Jonas, Chelsea Clinton, and Emmy Rossum also used plenty of exclamation points to show their delight.
For her part, Chrissy Teigen had just one request: "Don't yell at me," she begged of everyone cheering around her.
