Neil Patrick Harris Had a Cringe-Worthy Twitter Exchange with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's Rachel Bloom (UPDATED)
A certain backstage moment at the Tony Awards prompted this awkward interaction.
UPDATE (June 13, 2018, 5:25 p.m.): Neil Patrick Harris has apologized to Rachel Bloom for his tweet, after she said in a GQ interview that it left her "kind of devastated." Harris tweeted: “Sincere apologies to [Rachel Bloom] for my Tony tweet. I failed to research her before pressing ‘send,’ and what I thought was a funny comment in our living room must have been far from funny to read, backstage, mid show. As a performer and a parent, I should have know better.”
In her GQ interview, Rachel said, "Basically… I saw that tweet. And I was kind of devastated. I was actually going to tweet, ‘This makes me sad.’ But then I was like, ‘Ehhhhhhhhhh… I don’t want to give him that, necessarily.” The two actors shared a scene in How I Met Your Mother and Bloom found it strange he didn't recognize her from their previous interactions or bother to look her up before tweeting.
The original story continues below.
Have you ever had that awkward experience of introducing yourself to someone you've met several times before? So has Neil Patrick Harris. Except his little snafu happened at the Tony Awards, and it played out on a global stage. Whoops! Here's what went down.
During the awards ceremony on June 10, the How I Met Your Mother star tweeted that he was somewhat confused by a certain someone who was backstage wearing a top hat. Who was that person, he wondered? (As did his son Gideon.)
The thing is, that someone was Crazy Ex Girlfriend's Rachel Bloom. And as it turns out, the two have met. Er, more than once.
Here's Harris's original tweet:
Bloom was quick to respond, and filled NPH in on the ways that she's crossed paths with him in the past. Not only have the two met, Bloom's husband was also a writer on How I Met Your Mother.
Oh, dear. Harris was quick to concede, tweeting back: "Indeed! Well said." He then thanked Bloom for the reminder, and asked her: "How was backstage?" You know, just two old pals shooting the breeze.
Slightly awkward, but things could have been worse. After all, this wasn't exactly a Kanye West Twitter feud.
