After Show: Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys on the Final Season of ‘The Americans’

After five seasons, Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell will be saying goodbye to their hit FX show The Americans, which follows the lives of two Soviet KGB officers hiding out in America during the height of the Cold War. While appearing on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen on Thursday night, the two actors (who are also a couple in real life) were asked about plans to include one particular character in the final season when one caller inquired, “Is there a chance we might see a young Putin on The Americans?”

“That would be great,” Keri said.

Matthew was also on board, saying, “I'd pitched an east German KGB agent who we joke about taking over the world with.”

Unfortunately, neither one actually know what’s going to happen. However, they did spill plenty of tea on some past projects they've worked on. Another caller wanted to get some behind-the-scenes scoop on Brothers and Sisters, asking, “Who is the bigger diva, Calista Flockhart or Rob Lowe?”

“That was a hard fought battle for that trophy,” joked Matthew, “I'd probably say Rob," adding, “There weren’t any real, no clashes of the ego on that show. Though Sally Field with a wooden spoon was always on hand to take you down.”

Meanwhile, Keri was asked about any dirt she had on the relationship between Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, who were together back when Keri was filming Mission Impossible 3. “They were totally in love and so into each other,” she said.

But the real love story here is between Keri and Matthew, who got together on the set of The Americans and now have a child together. After being asked, “When did you two realize you were more than just colleagues and that you had the hots for each other?” they revealed just how long they'd known one another.

“We actually met a very long long time ago,” explains Matthew, “And I very drunkenly asked her for her number when she was a young slip of a thing. So I certainly knew then, when I was 26.”

“Do you want to say where it was?” asks Keri.

“It was in a parking lot,” Matthew readily answered, “So it was very romantic, and she asked me to open a beer.”

“After a kickball party,” Keri added.

The couple admitted it “took a while to rekindle” their brief romance. In fact, Keri didn’t even remember meeting Matthew until he reminded her about leaving “a drunken message” on her phone. And the rest, as they say, is history.
