This Primer Is Made with Vagisil — And It Is Actually Amazing
My makeup has never looked so flawless.
Whether it’s applying a base of vaseline on your cheekbones to help intensify your highlighter or taking shower to help your eye makeup set (as per Beau Garrett), we all have our own wacky beauty tricks up our sleeves. However, when it comes to putting unconventional makeup methods to the test, beauty blogger and entrepreneur Huda Kattan (aka Huda Beauty) truly raises the bar.
In addition to running her growing beauty empire, Kattan is known for her out-of-the-box beauty investigations on YouTube — including trying Vagisil as a makeup primer. Yep, you read that correctly. She even tested a variety of other creative primer substitutes, including milk of magnesia and K-Y Jelly lubricant.
In 2016, the makeup guru actually put the anti-itch cream meant for your lady parts on her face. Believe it or not, Kattan found that Vagisil indeed made for a great primer. Not only did she find that it “felt great” on her skin, but her makeup also looked flawless. As she noted in the video, Vagisil contains dimethicone. This key ingredient is great for oil control, which explains why it worked so well. Don’t believe us? Watch the video below to see the Vagisil work its magic on Kattan’s face.
Clearly, the beauty mogul was blown away by these results because she based her new primer, the Huda Beauty Complexion Perfection Pre-Makeup Base, on the Vagisil formula — except this product is actually meant to go on your face. To mimic the same effect of the itch-relief cream, the brand used dimethicone (that key oil-control ingredient from Vagisil) in the Huda Beauty Complexion Perfection Pre-Makeup Base formula.
Now, being the Kattan fan that I am, I just knew I had to give her latest product a try. And let me just start by saying that this is one wacky beauty experiment I can confidently stand behind.
As soon as I squirted a dime-sized amount of the product onto my finger, it already felt and looked different than any primer I’ve used before. Typically, primers have a super lightweight texture, which almost makes the product vanish into the skin. But this one felt like a moisturizer when I applied it to my face. As someone with dry skin, I typically have to apply a moisturizer even before a primer to prevent any flakiness, but with this product, there was no need. After pressing it onto my face, my skin instantly felt hydrated and had a natural glow.
However, the true magic came when I began to apply my foundation. I’ve never seen my makeup blend with such ease. After dabbing my foundation on with a makeup sponge, it appeared flawless. Basically, it looked like my skin, but better. Even the large pores along my T-zone were nowhere to be seen. Needless to say, I was certainly feeling myself.
But it was the long-lasting effects that truly had me sold. To put this primer to the test, I first used it on a busy Saturday day packed with 2-3 hours of laundry, dinner with my parents, and date night. From 11:00 am all the way until midnight, my makeup stayed put. Usually, I find my makeup getting cakey after wearing it for a few hours, but not this time. There was no need for any touch-ups at all. (!!!)
Ever since, this primer has become my newest beauty bag essential. Sometimes I even use it on its own, just to give my skin a healthy glow. TBH, I never would have imagined that a Vagisil-inspired beauty product would make it into my daily routine, but Huda, you’ve found a winner here.
