Stop What You're Doing and Read Mandy Moore's Top Life Lesson From Hiking Kilimanjaro
Perspective changes at 19,341 feet of elevation.
Travel has a way of bestowing wisdom on a person, and doesn't Mandy Moore know it. The This Is Us star just checked a major bucket-list goal off her list by hiking Mount Kilimanjaro. And in addition to bragging rights, she's taking a major life lesson home as a souvenir.
After completing the daunting hike, Moore took to social media on April 2 to share a new way of thinking that she'd acquired along the (steep, intense) way. And what she wrote might inspire us to banish the word "multitasking" from our vocabulary for good.
While on the mountain, Moore wrote: "We were only tasked with one goal every day: to find our breath and put one foot in front of the other. No distractions, no other responsibilities. How liberating! Our phones didn’t work and it forced us all to be completely available to the practice and meditation of being present — with one another and with the climb."
And even though her once-in-a-lifetime trip has ended, Moore is determined to incorporate what she learned into her day-to-day life. "Even though [hiking] is not real life, we all have jobs and families and our regularly scheduled lives to jump back into, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to apply that principle on a more regular basis," she wrote. "This journey was about so much more than simply checking off some item on life’s To-Do list."
She added: "I know that on days when I’m feeling especially overwhelmed with whatever lies in front of me, I can close my eyes, remember Kilimanjaro and pole pole. Slow and steady does win the race."
In an earlier post, Moore had explained that "pole pole" is a shorthand for taking the hike slowly. We're pretty sure we're also going to use it as our new life mantra.
