These Red-Carpet Beauty Trends Are Intimidating The Heck Out Of Us
Orange? Come on!
The Screen Actors Guild Awards served up plenty of surprises, and we're not only talking about the fashion. Sure, Nicole Kidman was covered in beaded parrots. But, there were also bold beauty looks that we'd typically expect at to see at an edgier awards show.
Okay, so there wasn't exactly red-and-green glitter hair. But, did you notice the intensity of the lips? One on end of the spectrum, stars like Maisie Williams, Busy Philipps, and Kate Hudson wore deep berry pouts. Then, we had Michelle Dockery and Ariel Winter blowing bright-orange kisses to adoring fans.
These are pretty strong statement lips, so we tapped an expert before attempting to try this at home. "Anyone can wear either a deep berry or an orange lip when the complexion is right," said Joanna Schlip, celebrity makeup artist for Physicians Formula. "The key is to keep the skin neutral, through color-correction, so the lip color doesn’t wash you out."
Behold these berry-lipped muses...
Maisie Williams' makeup artist, Kindra Mann, painted her lips with Lorac's Black Cherry Pro Liquid Lipstick. "You want to keep the skin flawless and glowing with this super dark lip," Joanna told The Lookbook. "Otherwise, you run the risk of it looking costume-y."
And hang tight before you get greedy with the brow pomade. "Keep the rest of your features simple so you’re not competing with the lip," Joanna said. "You can wear eyeliner and shadow, but opt for soft earth tones and keep the brow defined, but not overly bold." Makeup artist Debra Ferullo used the same logic for Kate Hudson's SAGs look.
"I love a deep burgundy lip, but this isn’t the time to go matte," Joanna said. "I like to keep the color glossy so it doesn’t appear flat, which can be aging and leave your lips looking dry and small." Busy Philipps wore her berry with a bit of gloss.
But, just when we thought deep and dark was the look, bright orange came along. Ariel Winter was one star to rock the trend at the SAG Awards (her makeup artist Kip Zachary used MAC's "Lady Danger.") "I love a juicy tangerine lip!," Joanna said. "I like to keep the color matte, but sheer and poppy."
Michelle Dockery's makeup artist, Rachel Goodwin, gave her gorgeous client an orange-tinted pout using NARS "Heat Wave" lipstick. "If you’re fair, bump up the warmth in your skin with bronzer," Joanna advises.
Bryce Dallas Howard, another fair beauty, also used bronzer on her cheeks to offset her orange-y lips. The actress works with makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua, who used Chanel products that night.
Pucker up! It's going to be a juicy awards season.
