TMI? Hilary Duff Talks About Drinking Her Placenta in a "Delightful" Smoothie
The mama swears the placenta snack was... shudder... delicious.
When Kelly Dodd shared what goes into her favorite smoothie, we were inspired and sipping strawberries and kale the very next day. And if drinking ginger with lemon juice and cucumber helped Shannon Beador get into the amazing shape she's in today, we'll get out our squeezer. However — with no shade to the lovely Hilary Duff — we don't think we'll be taking smoothie recipes from her.
The sweet singer, who just gave birth to a baby girl, shared her birthing story on the November 8 episode of Dr. Berlin's Informed Pregnancy podcast. More specifically, she revealed the snack she sipped right after the delivery.
It was... a placenta smoothie. And it didn't make the newborn mama shudder at all. "Most delightful smoothie I’ve ever had," she reported. "I haven’t had a smoothie that delightful since I was 10. It was calorie-filled with juice and fruit and everything delicious." What's more, Duff now has the placenta in her freezer, in ice-cube form.
In terms of sheer pleasure, drinking placenta might not place up there with, say, chowing on pizza. But the practice is hardly unheard of. In fact, Kim Zolciak-Biermann — and her hubby Kroy! — also sipped the smoothies after she gave birth to her twins. "It wasn't bad," Kroy said of the drink. "It was kind of like a Corona, minus the lime."
Though placenta smoothies are thought, though not scientifically proven, to stop bleeding and help prevent postpartum depression, Duff did cop to one possible not-so-great side effect: "I’ve heard placenta burps are not ideal," she said.
