Mariah Carey Finally Explains Why She Doesn't Know Jennifer Lopez and It Actually Makes a Lot of Sense
No diva was safe during the legendary songstress' #WWHL appearance.
Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez have been rumored to have beef with one another for years. Much of that has been fueled by Mariah's comments from more than a decade ago when she was asked her opinion on several contemporary pop stars and said she didn't know J.Lo.
So of course when Mariah sat down with Andy Cohen during Tuesday's Watch What Happens Live (clip above), he asked what we're all dying to know: Does Mariah actually know Jennifer now? "That was so long ago, I can't believe people still make such a big deal out of it," she told the emcee before once again saying that she doesn't know her.
Andy followed that up by saying that Jennifer has said Mariah does know her. "You know what? I'm very forgetful," Mariah said, explaining that the two have met in passing. "If I have never had a conversation with you and somebody asked me about you, I'd be like, 'I don't know him,' but he seems cool. Or, 'I don't know him.'"
So based on that criteria, does Mariah think Jennifer seems cool? "I don't know her. Like, what am I supposed to say?" she told Andy. "Like, I'm not gonna put on a thing, like we're all Hollywood and let's just all pretend we're best friends because we're in that land. It's no offense to anybody."
But don't take Mariah's comments to mean that she's never heard of J.Lo. "Like, the question was about Beyoncé, and I was saying I think she's super-talented, she's a friend of mine, she's always been sweet to me, she's always been very cool," Mariah said, recounting the interview in which her now-infamous comment went down. "And then they asked me another question [about Jennifer], and I was just like, 'I don't really know her.' I don't know how I said it, but I don't know her. It wasn't like I don't know who she is. Of course I do. That's not the question."
In an interesting turn of events, Andy told Mariah that J.Lo actually seemed into the teaser trailer for her upcoming E! series Mariah's World. "Oh, really? Oh, that's cool," the diva said in response.
Of course, some shade has come from Jennifer's side, too. She explained why she was caught looking at her phone during Mariah's performance at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards when she stopped by the Clubhouse in February. "First of all. That was not fair, with the texting thing. Because I watched a lot... it was a long performance. OK?" J.Lo told Andy during a game of Plead the Fifth (clip below). "I watched most of it. I may have looked down for one second. People were like, ‘Look at her! Look at her!’ So not fair. So not fair. I was watching her the whole time."
Mariah didn't have as nice things to say about Nicki Minaj during her WWHL appearance, someone she was also said to have a feud with when the two served as judges on American Idol in 2013. In fact, she didn't have anything to say about the rapper at all.
During a round of Plead the Fifth, Andy asked Mariah if she was able to say three nice things about Nicki. After a long pause, the chanteuse first responded with, "Can you?" After the WWHL host pondered if she wanted to plead the fifth on that one, Mariah instead took the high road. "You know, I always felt it was important in that situation to not plead the fifth but to just stay above the fray because you don’t want to be déclassé," she said (clip below). "You just want to move it along."
But Mariah doesn't have an issue with every superstar singer these days. She showed some love for Beyoncé on WWHL and addressed rumors that they're going to work together. "Are we collaborating? I don't know. We have never talked about it," Mariah told Andy. "I would love to do a collaboration with her."
And we would love that, too.
While we cross our fingers for a Mariah-Beyoncé duet in the future, check out more of Mariah's time in the Clubhouse, below.
