Chris Sullivan Addresses Fan Outrage Over Wearing a Fat Suit on This Is Us
"I can understand why people feel fooled by things they see on TV."
This Is Us is one of the buzziest shows on TV right now, and it had fans talking for a not-so-great reason when it was revealed that actor Chris Sullivan wears a fat suit to play Toby on the show.
Sullivan addressed the controversy when he appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen Tuesday night, and he actually had a surprising response. "Well, I think one, that the show is just too good, they had to find something wrong with it. Two, I can understand why people feel fooled by things they see on TV," he explained. "Three, I feel like we're currently living in a culture where outrage is a bit of a hobby for some people, and if they're not outraged about something, they're totally bored."

The actor went on to say that the fat suit serves a practical purpose on This Is Us. "It's a tool. It's a costume that I put on," he told Andy Cohen. "Logistically speaking, it allows me to travel back-and-forth in time when Toby was not as heavy as he is now, so there's a lot of things that go into that."
Sullivan's This Is Us co-star Chrissy Metz previously addressed the backlash on WWHL in February. See what she had to say, below.
