The Pantone Color of the Year for 2018 Has a Big Feminist Meaning

There's Christmas morning, and then there's the day that Pantone announces its color of the year. Seriously, we geek out big time over the latter: as soon as we learn what that hot hue is, we get a glimpse into the very near future of fashion, beauty, and home-design trends.

In 2017, it was all about the Greenery. But next year, trends are taking an Ultra Violet-hued turn — and we couldn't be more excited. What's dreamier than shades of purple? Nothing! Plus, the hues really pops in lipsticks and eye makeup, and we just love a purple nail. 

But, the 2018 color isn't just about aesthetics. In fact, it has a hidden meaning that ties in perfectly with the theme of women's empowerment that has been dominating headlines for the past several months. After all, the historic Women's March and the #MeToo movement were some of the biggest news stories from 2017. (And, remember that violet-lapeled suit Hilary Clinton wore while delivering her concession speech in November?)

"Ultra Violet conveys a sense of dignity, progress, and possibility," said Sarina Godin, Butter London's president. "It celebrates non-conformity and equality. This message is symbolic of female empowerment as women continue to express themselves in a multitude of forms — whether it be bold color, activism, or other artistic expression."
