Why You Need Dragon's Blood In Your Beauty Routine
It's not as scary as it sounds.
Ever since Kim Kardashian popularized the Vampire facial, we've been morbidly curious about the ways that blood can bring about a glowing complexion. Kim's treatment saw her face splattered with her own plasma, and honestly, it was kind of a scary sight. But we can't argue with the results: the reality star has always had flawless skin.
Still, we'd rather stick with dragon's blood—which is also trending in top-shelf beauty products—for now. Rodial, the luxury skincare brand, is one company that incorporates the spooky-sounding ingredient into its goods. So, what exactly is dragon's blood, and are any dragons harmed in its extraction? Not as such.
"Dragon's blood is a red sap which is found in the Croton Lechleri tree in the Amazon," Rodial's founder and C.E.O. Maria Hatzistefanis told The Lookbook. "It has the most amazing healing and protective qualities—the locals use the sap directly on burns and skin irritations." Inspired by the benefits of the unique ingredient, Maria decided to build a whole product range around it. "Today it is our best-selling range, and we were the first brand to bring this ingredient to market," she says. Maria adds that the range has famous fans, including Ellie Goulding. (Ellie is keen on the Dragon's Blood Eye Masks, in particular.)
The eye masks ($6 apiece) smooth out and firm the skin. The range also contains a Dragon's Blood Cleansing Water ($36), which is a gentle no-rinse formula that's suited to sensitive skin, and uses vitamin B3 to give a brightening boost.
The products may come in particularly handy as the temps descend. The whole range, Maria says, "is pumped full of hyaluronic acid for deep hydration and plumping." And while the central ingredient has a fearsome name, Maria promises: "there are no scary side effects!"
