Vogue UK Just Ticked Off Hundreds of Readers—Especially The Busty Ones
Here's what this cleavage controversy is all about.
Vogue UK is a highly esteemed arbiter of style. Readers rely on the magazine to tell them what's in (right now, it's chinoiserie) and what's out: this season, it's cleavage. Pause to gasp.
In a quickly-made-infamous story for the mag's December issue, writer Kathleen Baird-Murray asks "Whatever happened to the cleavage?" Though the full story isn't yet posted online—and we haven't gotten our hands on the issue just yet—the magazine teased some of its contents. "The t*ts will not be out for the lads. Or for anyone else, for that matter," Kathleen writes, going on to list some of the latest, high-necked fashion trends as evidence that cleavage is being tucked away. (Think pussy-bow blouses.)
But, The Independent reported some more controversial points made in the story. Apparently, stylist Elizabeth Saltzman told the mag that her clients are shying away from exposing too much cleavage because of social-media trolls. "On those occasions where [my busty client's] cleavage is more visible, I see what happens on her Instagram feeds afterwards, and out of about 100,000 comments, 90,000 will be about her boobs," Saltzman reportedly said. "That’s not healthy, that's creepy.”
So, hold up: the "creepy" commenters needn't change their behavior, but women should change their style? That's how some readers took the statement, at least, and they quickly went online to make some comments of their own.
One Twitter user wrote: "Well Vogue, I'm afraid I'm rather stuck with my cleavage. Tragically I won't be on point this season."
And, Refinery29 writer Kimberly Truong noted: "busty women can't help being busty, and breasts aren't an accessory that you can return to the store in an effort to stay fashionable."
