This Is What It's Like to Dress Beyonce
Designer Walter Mendez spilled the tea.
Under "hobbies," we'd probably list "looking at Beyoncé's outfits" first. But while we get to kick back and swoon over photos of Queen Bey in dramatic gowns, spiffy athleisure, and looks that simply require no pants, there's a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into each of the icon's public appearances. (Also, she was born that fab — but that's another story.)
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Los Angeles-based designer Walter Mendez shared exactly what it's like to dress the Hold Up singer. Working with Bey's stylist Zerina Akers, Mendez made the custom, emerald-green gown that the Queen wore to Tidal's charity concert on Tuesday night.
Need a quick refresher? It's this bomb-shelliest of all bombshell dresses. We're still fanning ourselves.
Mendez and Aker connected a few weeks before the New York concert. Beyoncé needed a special lewk for this particular event, as it was her first official red-carpet appearance since giving birth to twins. No pressure.
Mendez began his brainstorming by dreaming up colors that would be flattering against Beyoncé's skin tone. "Immediately we thought of emerald," he said. The dress' sexy, body-clinging silhouette was made with the singer's curves in mind, and Mendez gave the frock a thigh-high slit to show off his star client's "great legs."
To add a little more dazzle, Aker accessorized the dress with an Alexander Wang x Judith Leiber clutch, crystal earrings, and sparkling pumps. And, here's the sweetest part: Bey wore the look on Mendez's birthday.
As one does when one looks unabashedly fly, Beyoncé posted several snaps of the look on Instagram. Predictably, Mendez's phone instantly started ringing off the hook. "My joke that I keep telling is that [Beyoncé] literally redefined my B'Day," the designer said.
