Porsha Stewart: My New Single Is Out Next Month
Exclusive details on her debut "Flatline"—and how Kandi Burruss helped her creative process.
It's been a rough year for Porsha Stewart, whose tumultuous divorce has been chronicled on the current season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. But she's found a therapeutic way to deal with the pain: recording music. And after months of preparation, she's finally ready to share her journey with fans.
"I just finished the first single," she tells The Dish exclusively of her upcoming five-song EP. "We're going to be releasing the single within the next two weeks! I'm so excited!"
A songwriter helped Porsha (who is now going by the last name Williams) harness her feelings for her first single, a ballad called "Flatline," after she and former NFL player Kordell Stewart went their separate ways last year. "I've been working on this song throughout the whole divorce and the whole season [of RHOA], mapping out my emotions and putting in things that I've gone through," she explains of her "soulful" sound. "It's really kind of a documentary of everything that I went through to become who I am now.
"It's emotional and it's me really being vulnerable and just saying the things that a lot of people feel when you have a heartache and break up with someone," she adds.
But Porsha wants to make one thing clear: she's not releasing a vanity single just for kicks like so many other Housewives who've come before her (not that the world didn’t need former RHOA star Kim Zolciak's "Tardy for the Party" and "Google Me" or The Real Housewives of New York City's LuAnn de Lesseps' "Chic, C'est La Vie"—to mention just a few).
"I know that I'm taking myself seriously. This is not my first time in the studio—I've done demo tracks before," Porsha explains. "I didn't become a Housewife and say, 'Oh, I want to sing!' I just decided I had the time to put into it, to actually release something this time. When you go through something like I did, you lean on music. It was really important to me and I decided I wanted to share that with everybody else."
Porsha says she sought advice from her RHOA co-star Kandi Burruss, a Grammy-winning songwriter. "We didn’t work together on any of these songs, but she did stop by the studio once or twice while I was working on a couple songs and gave me a few angles and pointers," says Porsha. "She was such a great friend—pushing me and telling me she believed in me. She was very encouraging."
Porsha says she broke down when she heard her new track for the first time and can't wait to see how other react when it's released next month. "When we first put it together, I literally cried," she says. "I was like, 'Wow, this embodies everything that I have ever felt, and any of my girlfriends have ever felt, when they were coming out of a breakup. It's just a beautiful song."
