People Are Wearing Houseplants on Their Nails
Plus, see the other top Instagram beauty trends for fall.
In the ever-evolving world of beauty, it's often hard to keep up with exactly what trends are catching on. Is monochromatic makeup really gaining popularity, and are girls seriously wearing bright violet lipstick to the office? Yes, and yes, but let's pause to reflect on breaking Instagram news: people are wearing houseplants on their fingers, and testing out other bold trends that make it difficult to focus on work. How could we, when there are these Instagram trends to scroll through?
1. Glitter Lips
While this may have started off as a mix of editorial, runway, and club-kid makeup, it's actually catching on in the mainstream—partially because it's so easy to do at home. "Glitter lips can be quick and easy," explains celeb makup artist Jessika Bekteshi. "I like to use clear lip gloss and very gently tap my brush into the glitter pot and dab the glitter onto the lips. Keep repeating until you've fully covered the lips to get a very shiny glittery lip. For any fall-out, use scotch tape to dab the areas where you want to remove specs of glitter. If you are looking for a bolder look, try a lipstick that matches the glitter first, then add the gloss second, and lastly add the glitter." Instagram has basically been taken over by the #glitterlips hashtag in the past several days, see for yourself:
2. Succulent Nails
Think we're kidding? We're not, because it's true: this favorite hipster house plant has made its way to nails. While we're not totally sure how long it lasts, we suspect the shelf life here is not as long as a gel mani or a less "living" manicure option.
3. Glitter Eyeshadow
The glitter thing is having a serious moment in time, again. (You remember body glitter from back in the day, don't you?) Instagram is taking no shimmer-free prisoners with this one. The important thing to remember here is you'll need eyeshadow grade glitter, because using the craft store stuff is simply not safe next to the windows to your soul. Applying glittery eyeshadow can be a little tricky, so prepare to spend a bunch of time practicing your technique and keeping eye-safe makeup remover wipes on hand for accidental glitter overdoses.
4. Cut-Crease Eyeshadow Shading
This one actually pairs nicely with glitter eyeshadow, so it makes sense the trends would make a comeback in tandem. Cut-crease eyeshadow is basically the art of making significant, artistic, and well-angled delineations between eyeshadow shades, specifically around the eyelid crease. It's easy to do, and all you need to do is put the shading brush down.
5. Just-Below-The-Shoulders Hair
Remember last spring, when everyone was chopping their hair to that elongated, angled bob? Well, that's been done, and everyone who's anyone on Instagram has grown their 'do out a couple inches or so since then, making the slightly-below-the-shoulders hairstyle the one to beat this fall. It's been a big celeb trend, too, with stars like Lucy Hale joining in the cool girl hair trend.
So, which of these will you try?
