See Katy Perry's Met Gala Style Evolution, From Wonder Woman to Goth
Here's everything the 2017 Met Gala co-chair has worn to the ball.
If anyone loves dressing for a theme, it's Katy Perry. The pop star takes costumes to a whole new level for her videos and tours (and even for presidential campaigns). That's true for the Met Gala too, so it makes perfect sense that Vogue bestowed Katy the honor of co-chairing the 2017 ball.
Katy's taking over the reigns from last year's co-chair Taylor Swift (awkward!). But Katy's new blond pixie should give her an edge with this year’s theme, held in honor of Comme des Garcons designer Rei Kawakubo. While we're waiting to see what she has up her sleeve for the 2017 Met Gala, let's look back on the current Vogue cover girl's first five appearances at fashion's biggest event. Because when Katy goes for it, she really, really commits, as seen by these outrageous looks.
1. 2016: Futuristic in Prada
Katy's look for last year's “Fashion in the Age of Technology” Met Gala was striking, to say the least. Bleached eyebrows, a charm necklace adorned with keys, giant platform shoes and an even taller lacquered beehive hairdo. That's not even mentioning the gorgeously gothic Prada dress. Tucked in there somewhere is a Tamagotchi (remember those little electronic pets!)
2. 2015: Edgy in Moschino
For 2015's ball, Katy turned to her fashion BFF Jeremy Scott, head designer at Moschino. They both showed up to the "China: Through the Looking Glass"-themed gala in matching graffiti-themed outfits. Katy set off her dress with a shaggy pixie cut, formal graffiti-covered gloves, and a cute little spraypaint can purse.
Madonna and Lady Gaga approved of the look. Remember the three pop stars' epic selfie? Not everyone was a fan of Katy's dress, though: Fashion Queens expert Miss Lawrence demoted her to his worst-dressed list that year. The gown turned out to be really controversial for an entirely totally different reason: it started a legal faceoff between Moschino and Brooklyn graffiti artist Rime, who claimed that the graphic used on the dress was a ripoff of a mural he designed in Detroit. The case was settled in July 2016.
3. 2013: Regal in Dolce & Gabbana
Just in case you didn't know Katy is a Met Ball queen, she wore a giant crown on her head to 2013's punk-themed event. The entire look is Dolce & Gabbana, and the incredibly intricate gown is inspired by Byzantine and Venetian mosaics in Sicily's Cathedral of Monreale.
4. 2010: Illuminated in Cute Circuit
Katy's Cute Circuit light-up gown circa 2010 is one of those unforgettable Met Gala gowns — and she wore it way before last year's much-hyped LED-covered Zac Posen dress worn by Claire Danes. “I know a couple of people are coming lit up and stuff like that, and I’m like, ‘I did that in 2010, you’re late!,'” Katy told People in the runup to 2016's tech-themed gala.
5. 2009: Heroic in Tommy Hilfiger
Tommy Hilfiger designed this blue halter dress for Katy for the Met Gala back in 2009. We're getting a Wonder Woman-vibe from that metalic collar and matching cuff. But we can only assume this gown will be very safe compared to whatever futuristic, avant-garde look Katy will turn up wearing on Monday!
