Pinch Us! These 2017 Met Gala Dresses Were Pure Fashion Fantasy
Rihanna stole the show—but she had some stiff competition.
Dubbed "fashion's big night out," The Met Gala is the event where celebs dress to impress. Though not everyone stuck to this year's "Avant Garde" theme, those who did, really did—and others stood out for daring choices that made our jaws drop. (We're looking at you, Bella Hadid.) Here are the 2017 Met Gala looks we'll never forget.
1. Katy Perry in Maison Margiela Artisanal
The co-chair of this year's function surprised everyone. Don't get us wrong; with her Met Gala track record, it was no surprise that Katy wore something totally avant garde. What was unexpected? Instead of sporting something by the evening's honored designer, Rei Kawakubo, the pop star opted for something by Maison Margiela. Vogue called her look "wearable art." Indeed!
2. Pharrell in Comme des Garcons
Pharrell, Katy's fellow co-chair, did wear Comme des Garcons—but opted for jeans from the edgy brand, rather than a tux. (What's up, Kanye!) His wife Helen Lasichanh also wore the label, and looked like an abstract butterfly doused in ketchup. (We mean that as a compliment.)
3. Rose Byrne in Ralph Lauren
Well, well, three makes a trend, so we're calling tomato red as one of the hottest hues at this year's ball. Other celebs to wear the striking hue included Thandie Newton, Rita Ora, and Emma Roberts.
4. Lily Collins in Giambattista Valli
Lily Collins took to social media on the way to the ball to say that her pink-and-black gown "barely fit in the car." Ah, but it was worth the tight ride. She also wore a dark lip that gave us a little nostalgia for Tay circa 2016.
5. Zoe Kravitz in Oscar de la Renta
Pink-and-black! Jot it down as a major trend for Summer 2017. Zoe's column gown came replete with a cape; her bodice was sewn with fresh roses that had been dyed, preserved, and hand-embroidered.
6. Claire Danes in Monse
Claire's glowing Zac Posen was our favorite dress at last year's gala. (I mean! It was heaven!) This year, the Homeland star went in a completely different direction, opting for a ruffled blouse and lace-up pants from the designers of Monse. This immediately reminded us of SJP's funky ode to Hamilton in 2016, made by the same designers.
7. Jourdan Dunn in H&M
The model took the deconstructed-suit thing one step farther.
8. Nicki Minaj in H&M
Believe it or not, Nicki's red-and-black showstopper was also by H&M. Fire emojis aplenty for you, Nicki! There's also a cool secret behind this look: According to Vogue, Nicki's "superhero" belt had an image of Rei Kawakubo's face and hair on its clask.
9. Emmy Rossum in House of Herrera
We're trying not to pick favorites. But, if anyone nailed black-and-white last night, we're looking at the classic beauty below.
10. Anna Wintour in Chanel
The evening's inimitable hostess was covered in ethereal sparkles. And Anna wasn't the only one who shone.
11. Gisele Bundchen in Stella McCartney
Gisele, another co-chair, also wore body-skimming, shimmering glass beads. In a classic look for the model, she wore her hair in a high pony, a sexy, smoky eye, and the glowing tan of someone who has Brazilian beaches in her blood. Fun fact: her dress was made from organic silk.
12. Solange Knowles in Thom Browne
Solange has avant-garde style on lock, so this year's dress code—"Avant Garde"— was probably a cinch for her to nail. Pay attention to her feet: those are ice saktes!
13. Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren
A trench-coat gown is something we've never seen before. But, we'd like a lot more of that, please! Priyanka looks comfortable, sexy, and waterproof—all at once.
14. Tracee Ellis Ross in Comme des Garcons
The Blackish actress was emeshed in a deep-blue cocoon—and she couldn't have looked more regal.
15. Kylie Jenner in Versace
Wow, Kylie! The makeup mogul turned it up for her second-ever Met Gala, bringing on the fringe and sporting a platinum-blonde bob. We're guessing it's a wig, but who are we to say? Kerry Washington also wore a blunt bob, as did Bella Hadid and Karlie Kloss.
16. Kendall Jenner in La Perla
Kendall Jenner wore a few strategically placed sparkles—and not much else! She enhanced the sexpot vibes with a bright red lip and artfully mussed hair. Notice another trend? Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, and so many other celebs repped for the red lip last night.
17. Selena Gomez in Coach
During E!'s live coverage, Zana Rassi explained that Coach was going for a "1930s, underwear look" with Selena's blush gown. But, more importantly, guys! Selena showed up with The Weekend!
18. Lily Aldridge in Ralph Lauren
Lily's white dress and up-to-there boots—paired with a hot-pink wisp of a veil—added up to something unexpected and fresh.
19. Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen
The commentary we heard around these poetic looks wasn't all flattering. But, we must admit: we love the bohemian, Renaissance-fairy vibes these sisters are serving.
20. Blake Lively in Versace
Anna Wintour had a light dusting of feathers, but Blake finished the job with a striking, bright-blue train. Trend alert! Sarah Paulson also brought the plumage, as did Julianne Moore.
21. Rihanna in Comme des Garcons
We squealed—actually squealed—when we saw this look. Rihanna brought the daring, egdy, avant-garde glamour we were were waiting for in this fantastical flower of a dress.
22. Gigi Hadid in Tommy Hilfiger
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills daughter served us pale pink and cat-eye, and a little bit of leg. She looked like the perfect punk princess. Her beauty look called for faux bleached brows, or what makeup artist Erin Parsons referred to as "whsiper brows."
23. Bella Hadid in Alexander Wang
Bella made jaws drop in a skin-tight cat suit by the New York designer.
24. Zendaya in Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda
Zendaya took our breath away in a brightly printed baroque gown with a crown of curls. The Italan brand could not have picked a better young spokesperson.
