Pharrell's Latest Hat Left Everyone Feeling Confused
Wait—is that an haute-couture yarmulke?!
To showcase his latest Collection des Métiers d’Art for Chanel, designer and proud cat papa Karl Lagerfeld chose a very civilized setting: The winter garden at the Paris Ritz. The storied hotel—which reopened in June after extensive renovations—was itself an inspiration for the handmade collection. "The Ritz has always been an international place, full of elegant people, and somewhere where one could come to see elegant, modern clothes coming and going,” Karl told The New York Times.“I wanted to recreate something of that at this show today, at what I consider the cosmopolitan spot par excellence."
Audience members sat for tea, lunch, or dinner as a procession of models filed by wearing bouclé jackets, tweed suits trimmed with marabou and jewels, and sequined evening gowns. Karl chose a classic cast of Chanel muses to parade the glittering couture. Recognize any of these faces?
Cara Delevingne let her quirky personality shine through in an ivory tweed suit.
And Lily-Rose Depp made her runway debut in a gold, midriff-bearing look.
But then, something rather random happened: Pharrell Williams appeared. It's not uncommon these days for fashion houses to showcase their men's and women's collections side by side on the runway (Dolce and Gabbana just did it, too!) And, it's certainly not unheard of to see male models in pearls. (Thank you, Rihanna!) But, Pharrell wore a small accessory that had people doing a double take.
"Is Pharrell Wearing a Chanel Yarmulke?," Vogue asked, in our nomination for headline of the year. Upon closer inspection, the singer does seem to be wearing a bejeweled version of the traditional Jewish skullcap. And if he is, the timing is certainly right: Hanukkah is right around the corner. Plus, is there ever a wrong time to wear Chanel?
