Grab Tissues: The Meaning Behind Meghan Markle’s Engagement Ring Will Make You Cry
Every aspect of this ring pays homage to Princess Diana.
This morning we learned that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are officially engaged — and while we're completely over the moon for the lovebirds, naturally our next thought was show us the sparkler! The happy couple posed for photos today at Kensington Palace to celebrate their engagement, and the only only accessory Markle needed to go along with her pristine white coat was that incredible diamond ring. Of course, the ring the royal picked out for his fiancé actress is stunning, but the story behind it has us reaching for the tissues.
It has such a beautiful backstory: The two diamonds on the sides of the ring belonged to Prince Harry's mum, Princess Diana, according to ABC News. The center diamond is from Botswana, which may have something to do with Africa's special significance for Lady Di and the royal family too: Princess Diana often traveled there to stay with her brother Earl Spencer and friend Nelson Mandela, and it's a place Prince Harry frequently visits to escape the pressures of daily life. The gold band is made by Cleave & Company, a favorite jeweler of the royals.
Another reason we absolutely love this ring, is that it fits with the princess bride-to-be's low-key style perfectly too. (Cardi B's $500,000 pink diamond ring is just a bit flashier, for example.)
We can't wait to see how Markle puts her own personal touches on the spectacle that is a royal wedding. Every British (and American) designer is probably sketching ideas for her gown right now too, so now that the engagement ring reveal is done, the wait for Markle's dress is on.
