As someone who remembers when the AppleIIC debuted back in the '80s—who in their 30s didn’t spend hours in front of that green screen playing Oregon Trail?—I can say that I’ve seen more than a thing or two when it comes to tech developments. And while smartphones and laptops and wifi-enabled speakers have certainly impacted my life, the selfie is something that has impacted my whole generation and beyond.

Pray tell, how did we all exist without the selfie? I honestly don’t remember ever flipping my clunky camera over to take a photo of myself back in the day—ya know, when I was touring Niagara Falls with my family or at a cheerleading competition with my squad. Did we ask strangers to document these moments for us? Did we rely on those dreaded self-timers? Oh, the horror.

Thankfully—and yes, at times, obnoxiously—the selfie is here to stay, and as such, it’s probably time to succumb to the movement if you haven’t already and learn how to take the best ones possible. Lighting is a huge factor, as well as a remote control, finishing powder to have you looking #flawless and, of course, the good ol’ selfie stick for those times Mount Rushmore just won’t fit into the background when you try to long-arms it.
