5 Weird Things The Gucci Cruise Show Made Happen, Against All Odds
From pearl eyebrows to fanny packs.
There are two things we've come to expect from Gucci runway shows under the helm of designer Alessandro Michele: spectacular, historic venues and truly bonkers accessories. Check and check for the Gucci Cruise 2018 show, held this week at the Palatina Gallery at Florence's Pitti Palace. Alessandro took that magnificent setting and ran with it, describing the over 100 looks as "Renaissance rock ‘n’ roll," according to WWD.
The meaning of that theme translated to everything from to tiaras emblazoned with silver lyres, Botticelli-babe hair, and a new slogan proclaiming “Guccify Yourself.” Here are some of the kookier accessory trend from the Gucci universe:
1. Hand Jewelry
Models wore rings on every finger, but they also had on really interesting pieces of hand jewelry. Think delicate beaded glove-like bracelets and this exuberant star-covered palm cuff.
2. Fanny Packs
Designers are constantly trying to bring belt bags into the mainstream, and it hasn't quite hit yet. But maybe Alessandro can make fanny packs happen, especially if they are as pretty as this one.
3. Creepy Cat Purses
Opulent cat ladies, get ready: Kitty motifs made their way into so much of the collection. But this cat bag with its unblinking eyes is unsettling for some reason.
4. Turbans and More
Headgear played an important role at the show, from these dramatic headcoverings to laurel crowns to turbans (singer Beth Ditto memorably wore one for her Gucci Cruise performance). An aside: we're betting that Salma Hayek is going to add those bedazzled sunglasses to her Gucci sunnies collection.
5. The Pearl Necklace Gets Bizarre
Pearls can be a pretty staid looks — but not when you wear them in lieu of eyebrows or completely framing your face. This might just be the next festival style hit.
6. The Jared Leto Factor
Part of the fun of a Gucci show is seeing what Jared Leto's going to turn up in (he and Alessandro have a full-fledged bromance). We have to say Jared might've outdone himself this time. While the facial hair is very incognito, this outfit is more "look at me," from the velvet purple coat to those silver sneakers.
