A Designer's Best Friend

Heidi announces that for this challenge the designers will create an outfit inspired by fashion’s hottest accessory, but they won’t learn anything more until they meet me the following morning. Speculation about the particulars of that accessory abounds!

There I was in Central Park on a cold morning in late May. I had 13 adorable pooches corralled with me behind a berm, so we would be out of sight. I was rapt with anticipation about the designers’ reactions, and they didn’t disappoint!

The designers were instructed to come forward and choose a dog. Their dog would serve as the inspiration for a womenswear design for their model. Additionally, they were to create a corresponding design for their dog. Finally, they were told to think narratively about their design; that is, who is their customer, what does she do, and where is she going with her dog? Once back at Parsons, they had 30 minutes to sketch, followed by our shopping expedition with a budget of $150. And they were given two days for this challenge.

Our special guest judge was Ivanka Trump. I was thoroughly delighted -- and I’ll admit, surprised, too -- to learn that she’s incredibly articulate and exceptionally knowledgeable about fashion. I assumed that she was knowledgeable about clothes, but I was not prepared for her thoughtful and deft critiques of the designers’ looks. She blew me away.

I feel compelled to mention that for me, this challenge was a turning point in the work of the 13 remaining designers. Never before in any season of the show have I seen such ambitious work created. Not only do we have sleeves, but they’re on coats and jackets! Bravo, designers!

Tim, congratulations on season 3! I just finished watching episode three (twice), and noticed that you and your speaking parts were cut from the intro! What happened? Did you have any part in the change; or what? Heidi may be the host, but everyone watches Project Runway for you and your mentorship with the designers. Keep up the great work!

I'm very very confused as to how Angela is still on the show. Her outfit looked like one of the camp kids threw up all over it. I can't believe Michael didn't win.
I laughed really hard when the judges liked Bradley's outfit.
Anywho, please get rid of Angela- and I'm just dying to know who gets kicked off. I've heard words on who it is, but I'm still looking forward to it.

UGGHHHH!!! I have never been soooo upset with a reality television show in my ENTIRE reality television show life. I know I'm obsessed with project runway. Having met half of the first seasons cast at the W bar in NYC may have led to my addiction, but if Angela stays on ONE MORE EPISODE, I may be done. This is an outrage!!! Okay, so I could have bought Katherine's dress at a BCBG sample sale, but at least her model didn't look like a cheap 80's hooker getup standing on Sunset Blvd (like Angela's did)! I am done with Angela. Is she married to a producer?!!! Her outfit was GROSS!!! And her story about a French girls camp for 6-12 year olds? I spent two summers working at a New England girls camp for 7-14 year olds (some of the most privileged 7-14 years you could ever meet, might I add) and we counselors NEVER wore anything more fashionable than Juicy Couture tees and denim shorts from a Delia's catalog. PLEASE someone tell me you Angela. I despise her more than Wendy Pepper.

Tim- as usual you are right on the mark with your thoughts and comments. It is really true that if the designers took your comments to heart, they would find your leadership helpful and their designs and execution improved.
I am in awe every week with the challenges and the creative process that is needed to fulfill them. I can hardly sew a straight line, so I do pillows. I take the designers creative thinkings and extend them into my own work as a artist- which has nothing to do with sewing but everything to do with creativity and "thinking outside of the box".
Ivanka Trump should be invited back- she's great. I'd like to hear more from Vera Wang- she's a little too quiet for me. Michael Kors and Nina Garcia with Heidi's knowledge as a model definitely make the conversations and the analysis realistic.

Tim,
I absolutely love this show and you!
As an art teacher in a public high school in North TX, I watch your evaluations carefully to see how you relate to your students. I use Project Runway as an example quite often to my students (fashion design oriented or not) regarding the level of excellence one must have to suceed. All "B.S." aside! No one wants to hear your weak explanations as you try to pass off poor work for your supposed best artistic effort.
I appreciate that you encourage the Project Runway participants to be real. I suspect you are the same way in the real classroom and commend you on being a real class act.
Best wishes and hope someday to have one of my students become one of your students. I just have one student at Moore College and she had done fantastic for her first year.

I loved Uli’s dress. I thought it was creative and that the patterns that she used were inspired; it was out there and new. It really popped out on the runway amid all of the other designs. It was fun and funky, just like the pug dog. Poor Katherine; if only she had made that hoodie (they are so in style right now and the judges loved the one on the dog!) I did think it was the right choice design wise to send her home. That dress was far too simple, and not in an elegant classic way; in an undone way. I was really rooting for Alison and I loved her garment. The hair to match her little poodle was fabulous! I think maybe she should have won over Uli (but I loved them both so it is hard to say!) Angela’s was ugly, plain and simple. What was that story about the kids camp? No one in there right mind would wear that around children! Come on Angela, be serious! We hardly saw Bonnie’s garment, but what I saw of it I liked. A bit big, but not ‘out’ worthy. Bradley; I thought his outfit was a good idea but it didn’t fit right. The volume of the top reminded me of Daniel V’s flower in the inspiration challenge except his was done much better than Bradley’s. But in the end I am glad Bradley is still with us! I liked Jeffrey’s and Kayne’s and Keith’s and am happy to see none are out. Keith is far to flippant though; that ugly dog should have pooped on him and gotten him in line! In my opinion Laura’s suite and Michael’s dress should have been considered for the win. They were both intricate and well designed not to mention flawlessly executed. The same goes for Robert. But hey, not everyone can win!

Kim wrote:

Some ambitious work on this show...although I thought the dogs' outfits could have been more closely tied to the models' designs.

Are Bonnie and Michael even in this competition? They both had some of the strongest looks and yet no attention was paid to their garmets on the show. I personally thought that Michael's should have been up for the win. Why is he getting no coverage or props on the show?

Glad to see that Tim is recognizing his talent.

I think angela should have gone home for making a xerox copy of her skirt and adding florets to it. She Is a Muse of herself. week 2 she could not even draw a gown let alone beg kayne to be her partner because she has no talent for gowns. Then to be wearing a bubble skirt this week next to her model. I wonder if that is all she owns.

This season is so frustrating to me. The fashions I wouldnt be caught dead in always make it in. Angelas design tonight made me sure that she was gonna be off'd. I think that even Paris Hilton would find that in poor taste, it was hideous!

Kathrines dress was simple but no more simple than Vincents dress was. At least it had some color. I dont get it this season, I just dont.

Keith's smug attitude is going to be the downfall of this designer. He looks dwon on the rest of the designer and am grateful to Nina for her comments which does level the playing field for any designer who fails to be courteous to the judges and forgets they are there to judge the design and the designersand deserving every courtesy from the designers.

Boo! *HISS* What are the judges thinking??? Am I wrong or was Bradley's outfit a monstrosity? I guess I must know little about fashion because to me it looked like she was wearing a potato sack as a blouse! And Angela....the poor girl....I hope she realizes she doesn't stand a chance. Maybe if we were dressing Madonna back in the 80's I would feel differently. Now, I am a HUGE Uli fan and really did love her outfit. But, I have to be fair and say that I didn't think her's was the best. I really felt like Alison deserved to win this one. I mean, even the judges said that she actually had a vision far superior to the other designers' efforts. Now for Katherine, she definitely did NOT deserve to go home this time. Her dress was plain and simplistic but I would MUCH rather see a friend of mine walking down the street wearing her outfit than the one Angela designed. Whatev! I realize she wouldn't have won, but she definitely didn't need to go home this time. Also, thanks Project Runway for constantly teasing us with the preview about having to ask someone to leave. We've all been waiting in anticipation since before the show began to see who it is. Hope we finally find out next week!!!

The judges had a difficult job this time, in my opinion. I really liked Ulli's outfits, but I also thought that Michael's, Alison's, Laura's, Jeffrey's, and Robert's were beautiful. So far, I think everything Michael has done on this show, plus the outfits the 3 qualifying pieces he designed, have been stunning.

Vincent sent the model out in a black tee shirt and a pair of leggings -- so what. Somehow he skated by, and they threw off Katherine for having a dress that was "too plain." How could that dress be plainer than a black tee shirt?

I'm beginning to wonder if Vincent is Nina Garcia's brother in law and she's trying to get him off her sofa and out of her house...well, not really. But you know what I mean. Someone is cutting him some slack.

Keith had no right to even question the judges decision. He made the decision to not follow the instructions for the design, he should have really lost out right.

Tim! I loved loved loved this challenge. I couldn't stop smiling at those adorable dogs and how the designers (well, most of them anyway) warmed up to them as well. Your entrance with them might have been the cutest thing I have ever seen. I'm tired of Angela and her bubble skirts though, but the presence of the dogs made it hard to get too worked up about this week's results. I can't wait for next week's "kookiness." p.s. your episode 2 podcast was among the most entertaining ones ever. I was giggling like no other and can't wait to listen to this week's. Love you Tim!!

Miss Dish wrote:

Tim,
You asked why Keith refused to design for the dog when it was part of the challenge? Remind you of last week? Part of that challenge was team work, yet neither Angela nor Vincent worked as a team. If the judges don't start paying attention to the beauty in Micheal's work I'm really going to have to stop watching this show! Lisa M wrote:

I cannot believe that Keith got away with his audacious stand of no costume for his dog! This was the challenge judges!! What were the judges thinking? The challenge was clear-to design around a woman and her dog- not just the woman. He should have been eliminated for not obeying the rules. How could they judge a dog costume that did not exist? And he lied like a dog (sorry dogs to liken you to slimy Keith) saying he made costumes and rejected them. Alison's green dress was simple, but she had a corresponding cute dog outfit, and it met all the requirements, and was cute as well, if not ambitious. Keith was just contemptuous of the rules, and rules in competitions are not made to be broken. I don't understand how accepting the judges are of Keith. First he wins with a dress with no innovation in an innovation challenge, then doesn't even make a dog dress in a dog dress challenge. Judges--listen to your own DIRECTIONS!

Did you say Laura used real lamb fur? Animals are our friends, NOT for fur. Otherwise I loved her outfit--it was so her! I also loved Michael's and Robert's designs. If the skirt were a little longer, I would LOVE to own Robert's outfit (i'm in the over-40 group).
And I SO agree with you Tim: what was Vincent thinking?!!! Yikes!!! Yet, he'll be back for another week of insanity.

Miss Dish wrote:

For some silly reason I thought Angela would realize what an idiot she looked like last week in that stupid little bubble skirt. But somehow she sees it as fashion! I was apalled that she actually designed the same skirt for her model on the runway! Yikes!!! And those little florets? They certainly didn't add anything to the design. But the judges let her stay; again! Too bad Catherine didn't make the hoodie for her dress. Because it was too simple of a dress and a matching hoodie could have been adorable.

Tim,
I think you did an exceptional job critiqing the designers. I wish that Katherine had followed your idea and made a matching hoodie for her dress. She would still be IN and Angela would be OUT! But I'm really starting to think like some of the other posters that some people are kept for their personality or their potential for drama/conflict. Poor Katherine was a little mousey and not high on the drama scale. Angela's antics and lack of design skills keeps everyone talking.
But at least the judges got the winner right this week! I thought Uli's dress was adorable as was the dog's matching outfit. She took a risk with the fabric she used and the end product was outstanding!

Dear Tim,

You said in the podcast you weren't sure what kind of dog Keith had. It's a Chinese Crested, which are very rare and high maintenece dogs. While Morgan was an excellent example of the breed, a search on Sam, the three-time champion of the World's Ugliest Dog contest, will show the other, and sadly much more common, end of the spectrum.

To people who watch PR and think they'd like to own this kind of dog, please do not buy one on a whim! Any vet can tell you that they frequently have teeth growing backwards through their jaws, or their eyelids are on inside out, or some other bizarre problem. They are already very inbred, and a spime in demand will only harm the breed.

Jeffrey really came along this episode. Not only did he compliment the other designer's styles for the first time (even though he added, "but I like mine better", it's an improvement from the "remedial bullshit" of the first episode) his dress was GORGEOUS! When he doesn't get wrapped up in all that rebel crap, he can really churn out a beautiful outfit huh?! Vincent however, continues to confuse me. Or, more specifically, Vincent's judging confuses me. If anyone deserved to be out more then Angela, it was most certainly Vincent. In fact, in an Angela-Vincent match up, I would probably defend Angela. Vincent's outfits are entirely too 80's to be acceptable in the current fashion industry (which has been in a mad rush to distance itself as much as possible from tights and leotards since 1990) whereas Angela could potentially hone her artsy craftsy vibe in that particular growing trend in fashion. Everyone else did such a nice job, once the field is narrowed down it'll be interesting to see if the criteria is forced to move from basic tailoring and good design to personality. In that case, Kieth is gone.

Great show. The designers really seemed to step it up this time around. The runway show (with a few exceptions) was outstanding and the dogs were soooo cute. But I have one bone (no pun intended) to pick with this season so far...why isn't Michael being recognized for his amazing talent?? He is one of the most innovative and impressive designers on the show this season, but I have yet to see him be recognized by the judges or even given much camera time compared to the other designers. His design in the first challenge was incredibly innovative (coffee filters) and he should have definitely been in the top 3. During the 2nd challenge, it was clear that he and Laura made an excellent team, but they were hardly shown at all. There was no footage of Tim commenting on their work. And now during challenge 3, again, his work was very innovative, but he did not end up in the top 3, nor was there footage of Tim commenting on his work. I cannot understand why this has gone on for 3 episodes. Please give Michael the recognition he deserves!

I'm sorry, but am I the only one who thinks the judges are in Oz? Bradley's ho-hum little number in the top three? What?!! Laura, Keyne, Michael, Robert -- great outfits. Uli definitely deserved to win, that was an easy call. Not so sure Katherine should have been sent home.

I love this show. I was not able to see Season 1 because I didn't hear about it. I loved 2nd season. The Asian deserved to win. Although I loved Daniel. His clothes were classic, but the Asian (I believe her name was chole, I think) I loved her clothes. They were very clean cut and very much the kind that I would wear.
The girl on Runway 3, I think her name is Angela...She sucks. She cannot sew and kind of makes up stuff on the way. She should have been kicked off last week when ya'll did the teamwork episode. She is worthless. Love the show.

Ah, another fasinating look at today's hottest up-and-coming designers by Tim! As always, your blog is both witty and astute. I'm still surprised, however, at the judge's reactions to Bradley's design--his outfit was so...questionable? --and yet they lathered on the praise. A subtle birthday present, perhaps?
I'm also surprised to see Angela is still with us. Her outfit was a reflection of dubious taste, to say the least.

I'm pleased to see Uli take the win. Her dress was sensational! The fabric, the cut...I expect to see her in the Top 3. Zum Wohl!

Looking forward to next week's episode. Best of luck to all the contestants!

I am glad the snowboard girl got bumped....I was so unhappy and floored when Malan got bumped last week-he is a great raw talent with vision and style. I hope someone picks him up. Can't wait for the next episode! Its going to be a hard call from here on.

Once again, Tim, you're right on the money. I was hoping Kayne's outfit would win, I thought it was stunning and unbelievably, to use your word for it, ambitious. I was disappointed in Keith, I think his attitude was terrible, and I don't think he appreciates what the show could do for him and his career. Honestly, I (almost) though he should have been out this week, if it weren't for Angela's horrific outfit. Of course, I was wrong on both counts, it was Katherine. She's very cute but too inexperienced. I would have liked to have seen a little more of though.

I aprecciate Tim Gunn's responses to each episode of the show, but I'm a little disappointed that:

1. We don't see as much of Tim Gunn in each episode as we did last season. It seems the 3rd season has reenacted the 3rd season but using Mr. Gunn as a mere extra sprinkle to the show. I miss the 2nd season in which Tim made more appearances and we heard more of his opnion. I am wondering if Santino's constant impressions did not help to give Mr. Gunn more air time. If so, let's get these designers to try out their own Tim Gunn impressions so we can give him more air time!

2. Tim's comments for last season were in depth, and we learned much more about his opinion and each experience than we are now. We need more than a replay, we need to learn what goes on behind the scenes.

Despite that, I'm still loving the show, and I can't wait to see who gets kicked off! (sounds vicious, yes.) I am hoping it's not who I think it will be.

The others are ringers, frauds, fakes, bozos.

The real question is, who is on the receiving end of "we're going to have to ask you to leave"? The flawed but talented Keith for not dressing his dog, or the appalling Vincent, whose model wore leggings he neither designed nor made?

I am amazed at how people get passed along to the next stage of the competition when clearly their designs are inferior to the losing designer. It happened again last night. Maybe Katherine's design was on the plain side and not as innovative as it could have been (I personally thought it was quite wearable), but it was a heck of a lot better than the bubble skirt from Angela (does she know that skirts come in other designs?) and the leggings by Vincent. Why these designers continue to move when people like Malan and Katherine who clear have more talent don't is a mystery to me. It is quite obivous the producers want to keep these individuals around for entertainment value. Vincent doesn't act like he ever made a dress sold anywhere and how did Angela get on this show? My favorites were designs by Robert(very wearable) Michael(innovative) Uli's wasn't bad but I would not have picked her as the winner. Hated Kayne's design. Laura's was reminiscent of the coat from the first challenge. Would like to see what else she can do.

P.S. -Angela you have horrible taste . Laura you are very polished but I think that if I see another Cruella Deville coat from you I will die and your model will too from looking so old. First off I want to say I loved this challenge with the dogs. They were adorable and gave a real twist to the designers creativity. I can't say I totally agreed with the judges decisions on the top 3 as there were so many other designs that I though were so beautiful that weren't even high lighted, especially Michael's and Robert's. I do want to say though that even though many believe that Bradley's didn't deserve to be there, I give him a lot of credit for NOT giving up, especially when his model said she wasn't ready to go home. He really pushed harder when he realized he wasn't the only one in jeapordy if he didn't complete his project. It may not have been the most gorgeous outfit but it was complete and wearable. Kudos to Keith for being supportive to him also. Keith may be coming off as an arogant @$$ these days but he was in Bradley's corner the whole time. Now for my #1 favorite of the night....STANLEY!!! He was the absolute cutest dog on the runway. Way to strut your stuff.

As for the rest of the show, I can't figure out how in the world, Angela is still there after designing the hooker from hell outfit. Not to demean hookers in anyway but that outfit was downright ucking fugly!!!!!! And the story she had to support it, please, what kind of drugs was she taking to come up with that one???? What are these judges thinking. At least Katherine's outfit was something that a normal woman would wear out in pubic and the hoodie on the dog was really cute. Again, they sent the WRONG person home. PLEASE bring Michael Korrs back, maybe he can talk some sense back into the rest of the judges.

Also have to agree that Michael is NOT getting the super-"kudos" he deserves! What talent this man has! I mean, a beautiful dress exquisitely crafted out of "coffee filters"?? Imagination and talent I can only dream of! LOL! I'm also very disgusted with Laura (as I am an avid "animal/dog-lover"!)! I sorta' wanted to "smack her"! Who could NOT love a sweet little dog? And treat it well! After all, it was only for a couple of days! *Sheesh*! And did she really use "real" lamb fur in that outfit? That permanently "turns me off" to her - talented or not! I am pulling for Michael and/or fabulously-talented and chic Allison to win! These two, IMO, are NOT getting their "due" on PR this season! But as others have said, they don't bring any "drama"! Only TALENT and VISION and LOTS of it! LOL! Can't wait to see who is asked to LEAVE next week! WOW! Now there's some "drama"! LOL! Tim Gunn (love you), you are so completely on point with your assessment of the designs. Now, can you knock some sense into the judges? And Angela. Oh lord. She is honestly terrible. The worst. I totally agreed with Keith and his allusion to skittles because her design looked like one of her little campers ate a bag of those candies and vomited it all onto that horrid skirt. And what about the fact that it was EXACTLY the same design as the disgusting clothes she wears to every runway show?? I was horrified that the extremely talented Malan went last week instead of her, and this week was even worse. Her outfit was compared to that of a street walker! Sheesh I feel like I’m being punked. I must admit though, I am left scratching my head over how some of the most basic, uninteresting designs make it past the judges with little or no comment (unless, of course, that got edited out). C'mon people--this is PROJECT RUNWAY! Wow us!

I really enjoy the show, but I took some offense at last night's episode, in referring to dogs as accessories. This is a tragic line of thinking! It implies that the dogs are disposable and once the trend is over, can be gotten rid of. Pets, of any kind, are not accessories, but living creatures that must be cared for. Too often, people buy trendy dogs and when the dogs are no longer in, the dogs are sent to a shelter or destroyed. Pets are a responsibility and should not be gotten on a whim. I believe that a hot trend is accessorying your pet, but please, please, please do not contribute to the notion that the pet is the accessory!

Katherine should not have been let go. Her design was boring BUT she adhered to the rules of the challenge (unlike Keith) and did not create an abomination (a la Angela). It was one of the most finished and elegant designs I have seen in the entire three seasons of the show. Why is Michael's beautiful work glossed over every week? In contrast, Laura gets a lot more attention but I think her work, with the furs and the overdone collars and cuffs, is very one note. I'm starting to believe that the producers are allowing people to stay for personality and future conflict potential. How else to explain Vincent and Angela's continued presence, desspite their horrible work or allowing Keith to remian despite his obvious disdain for the judges and the parameters of each challenge?

The first suggestion is: if your mouse has a scroll wheel, hold down the CTRL key as you click on a blank space on the page. Continue to hold down the key and scroll up or down to change the font size on the page.

If that doesn't work, try this: Click the START button, clik PROGRAMS or ALL PROGRAMS, then click INTERNET EXPLORER. Click VIEW in the menu, click TEXT SIZE, then choose a font size. Next, click the TOOLS menu, then INTERNET OPTIONS. Click the GENERAL tab. Click the ACCESSIBILITY button. In the FORMATTING section, click IGNORE FONT SIZES SPECIFIED ON WEB PAGES box to place a check mark in it, then click the OK button.

The second option solved the problem for me. I must repeat that the credit for solving it goes to the online tech support folks at AOL...I just typed in the info. from the online help chat session.

I do not think it's cool when Nina Garcia praises something obviously very poorly executed (Bradley). I don't think she missed it - she had an agenda. You do not reliably penalize designers who ignore the challenge (Keith). You have really obvious favorites. I watch the show because of the designs. You have a pretty good idea who is in the top and bottom three just by the designers they highlight during the show. With Katherine, we see once again what happens when you don't take Tim's input seriously. I wonder if her "auf" this week traces back, in part, to last week when she basically gave Malan up to the judges.

I really think a team challenge has to be more of a collaboration than some of the designers are doing. Sure, the other person needs to yield to the creative vision to a certain extent, yet I don't remember Katherine expressing any doubts about Malan's reluctance to take Tim's advice or trying to sway Malan to be a little less over the top, so in that respect, I think she failed at the teamwork aspect a bit. (If anyone can correct me about Katherine's input or lack thereof, please do!)

For the Michael watchers, don't worry, he's going to come into his own. In a couple more weeks, I think the group will have bonded better, and our attention won't be distracted by the sheer number of contestants. Michael's got vision, but it hasn't been his time to shine yet. (And for the record, I thought his coffee filter dress TRULY filled the requirements of the first challenge and was lovely to look at.)

Tim, I wish the designers would pay more attention to what you have to say. Carry on!

Comments on last night's show:
Keith does beautiful design but I agree he should have got the boot for ignoring the dress-the-dog part. Remember he was fitting the dog & his design wasn't big enough? That's why he had nothing. His arrogance has no redeeming qualities unlike Santino, who was totally entertaining esp. with the Tim imitations and Andre songs. I thought Vincent's outfit was actually the most uninspired, if that is the juding criteria this week. Although his dog's was cute, so was Katherine's. I think it came down to execution with her unfinished hem as Vincent's seemed to be sewn OK. Angela's, while hideous, was sewn properly. Angela I expect will out herself fairly soon, as Laura said in the preview, she just insists on hanging herself. Laura does beautiful design but am I the only one thinking her fur collar and overall look this time was very much like her coat on Ep 1? Jeffrey redeemed himself this week, great dress, and overall I thought Tim's comments were right on. Very tough I am sure to choose between Alison & Uli, both were gorgeous. Thanks Bravo for this fabulously entertaining show!

While I love Project Runway and look forward to it every week, I was deeply disappointed by this week's episode. I do not believe that animals are an accessory, they are a joy and a responsibility. Promoting the idea that a dog is a fashion accessory is dangerous. What happens when the "accessory" is no longer in fashion. An old handbag may be thrown in the back of the closet, but what happens when the individual tires of the dog or it is no longer "fashionable"? Moreover, is the comfort and safety of the dog given any consideration in regards to the outfits they must wear for hours, or the handbags they are carried in for hours? I hope Project Runway will consider such issues in the future.

This is my first season watching Project Runway, and I enjoy the creativity of it - much better than all of the talentless reality shows. However, I don't understand what the deal is with the judging.

Why is it that Keith was not kicked off? Sure, his dress was nice - but he didn't make anything for the dog, which was 1/2 of the challenge. To me, this is the same as a forfeiture. I don't think it's fair to allow him to continue on and send home someone who at least tried.

The same goes for the previous week - why was Vincent not out? Half of the challenge was to work as a team to create something and he absolutely refused to do it. Aside from that, I thought his dress was a hideous Star Trekian nightmare. Sure, Malan's dress was not a success - but at least he tried and worked well with his teammate.

I understand the need for drama on a TV show - but I feel as though the judges are purely keeping irritating/bizarre people on because they make better TV. In this way, Project Runway is no better than reality shows that reward talentless celebrity-seekers. I'm considering not following the series the rest of the way through.

I am extremely impressed with this seasons talent level and hope all those who deserve to be at the top (In my opinion Michael, Laura, Uli, Kayne, Robert, Allison and, bite my tongue, even Keith) make it despite vociferous personality popularity/controversy sways given to those whose design style and execution don't match up (e.i. Angela,Vincent, and Jeffery).
I was a bit disappointed in the judges decision to off Katherine with this challenge especially given the reasoning of being too simplistic. It was a cutie green spring dress compared Vincent’s black Hanes-ware tube dress with tights which was not only also too simple but just plain depressing. I think if she had followed through with Tim suggestion to make a hoody and had maybe varied the different fabric colors hem links on purpose (maybe scooped in different directions) she might have hung on a bit longer.

This episode was really confusing for me for two reasons. One was the interduction. Why was it cut so short? I liked the longer one better, especially with Tim saying "Carry On." The second was Bradley's design. When I saw it go down the runway, I thought it would definetely be in the bottom three. The skirt was too simple and the top looked puffy and just plain unflattering. But then he's called off as one of the TOP three! What?! Did I miss something? I was in shock! I seriously thought they were joking. It seemed like they had to look for and make up positive comments about his outfit (like color mixture). The dog's outfit, or lack-there-off, was also silly. All he made was a collar for the dog and the judges loved it! I think they either kept him on because they felt sorry for him since it was his birthday. Honestly I can't fathom any other reason.

The unsung favorites for this challenge for me were Micheal and Jeffery. Kayne's dress reminded me of Nick's Barbie dress from season two only in a different color. I liked Laura's dress also, but it almost appears like she's one note: sophisticated. Don't get me wrong, her clothing is lovely, but I'm afraid it might become redundant with the judges. I hope that doesn't become the case.

Personally I think Allison should have won. Her outfit was beautiful as was the dog's. The two outfits corresponded the best also. Uli's was my second favorite. Her dress was really cute and pretty. She shouldn't have made the jacket though because it hid the back and made the dress less cute. I really liked the front too.

I agree with the judges choice to let Katherine go. Her dress was too simple. At least Angela's had imagination (although it wasn't neccesarilly GOOD imagination). I did like Katherine's dog outfit with the little hoodie.

I'm really looking forward to next week's episode. My best guess is that either Keith, Robert, or Angela is going to be the first designer kicked off for breaking the rules. Keith because he's turning into a major jerk, Robert because the preview for next week seems to be leaning toward hin, and Angela because she seems to be making a lot of stupid mistakes. Can't wait!

I must say that I feel that Michael is way under-represented. His first dress with the coffee filters was genious. It used unique items from the house (compared to a bed-sheet, like Keith's) and it really represented his style. This week's dress was gorgeous too. I don't understand why he's not at least making the top three. I have had it up to here with Keith. Just because you win one challenge doesn't make you the best. Get over yourself. Bottom line: Angela should have gotten kicked off, but Katherine really should have taken Tim's advice and made that hoody. Although it seems like those hoodies are the only thing she knows how to make...

Tim, I felt like I was hallucinating during the judging time this episode. Is this really happening, I kept wondering?? The judges were WAY off the mark this episode. First of all, Katherine's dress was not the worst. And she completed the challenge by making an outfit for the owner and the dog-- Keith did NOT. Keith should have lost because he was the only designer who clearly did not complete the challenge!! And, he lied to cover up his arrogant decision not to finish! Uli's dress was lovely but did not appear to me to be particularly innovative and certainly not different than the other two dresses she's made so far, all halter-tops and beachwear-esque. And the judges liked Bradley's hurriedly thrown-together disaster MORE than Michael's beautifully constructed dress??? Michael was the clear winner of this challenge in my eyes. Michael's design was clean yet innovative, and the only outfit in which the dog was a tasteful and appealing addition to the overall image rather than the pea-brained lapdog "accessory" made popular by the likes of Paris Hilton. Never have I disagreed more with the judges' winning pick. I am so diappointed.

Okay, so we have established that Angela is overdue for an "auf weidersehen". I have two issues aside from that one.

1) Is anyone else irritated that Uli produces the same dress every week for very challenge (with minor variations - varying prints, slightly different back details), but the judges have yet to notice or comment on her lack of creativity? Sure, her dresses are beautiful aesthetically, flattering, and well-constructed - ya think that might be because she has made thousands of them so she's had tons of practice making them perfect??!! I really don't look forward to seeing her work because I already know what it is going to look like (if I need a reminder I will re: the previous episode saved on my TiVO).

2. That being said, onto issue two. I totally agree with the poster that mentioned the lack of attention that Michael has been receiving for his work. I was flabbergasted in Episode 2 when the judges completely overlooked the fact that he had created an interesting, well-constructed garment made out of... coffee filters! I thought that that was an ingenious use of materials and that no one else even came close to creating as inventive a garment - and that was the point of this challange, was it not? Instead, mad props went to winner Keith, whose garment was comprised of another... unique... inventive material... fabric, that is... Sure, it was a beautiful dress, but I didn't doubt that Michael could've created just as beautiful a garment had a used an equally mundane - and easy to work with - material. Even if he hadn't won, he deserved much more praise than he received from the judges (or the producers, if they chose to edit his praise out of the show). Episode three - I thought that he should've won, hands down. His dress was beautiful, innovative, flattering - much different than his other designs. He has real talent and diversity that really should be recognized. Unlike poster previously mentioned, I can't promise to stop watching the show if things don't change (what would I have to look forward to every week?) but I won't be happy about it...

Love the show!!

It's clear to me that this season isn't about fashion at all, but keeping as many outrageous characters interacting with one another as possible. I think the producers are making calls that are devastating the original intent of the program. A) Make something beautiful/innovative, B) Make something wearable and C) Complete the task given to you. It’s clear to me that season 3’s contestants are being judged on very different factors. A) Have an attitude problem, B) Break the rules, C) Construct hideous cloths that no self respecting woman would wear. These will guarantee your spot on Project Runway!

Now it’s just another reality TV show. I can understand orchestrating a little drama, but to completely undermine all of the original values? Come on, judges/producers!

Sorry Katherine, you got totally wronged this week.

I, too, hated Angela's dress. If it wasn't for the fact that I saw her in the promo for next week's episode before the end of the show, I'd have been certain that she'd be the one to go. It looked like Starr from season one and Guadelupe from season two got together, got drunk, and decided to make a dress together. I can make a better dress, and I've never touched a sewing machine in my life.

And what does Michael have to do to be considered for a win? He's the one designer whose look I am always anticipating.

Love the show, but am clueless at some of the judging decisions this week and last. First of all, I thought Angela should have been gone last week for her uncooperative attitude and as ugly/outdated/terrible story as she had this week I thought it would finally happen this week. I would not have sent Katherine home - although it was simple I could see women wearing that today and I happened to like it (her dog was adorable) unlike Vincent's. I would have loved to see the dress with the hoodie. I don't know how her's was any simpler that Vincent's black thing/dress/shirt whatever you call it and tights - come on??? He is designing for a different time period. My favorite for the win was Allison - she had the whole package. I also loved Uli's, Michael's (what little I saw of it - I can't even find a bigger picture online), and Kayne's. I agree that Michael is not getting the airtime - he is so good at garment construction and being innovative. Laura's was good but really similar in design to her first coat - want to see more and thought she treated Sophie (what a cutie) horribly. Bradley's was sad although he pulled it together at the end but it did not deserve all of the praise it received. Keith did make a beautiful dress but he did not complete the full challenge and even pulled a Santino - I would think the judges would be tired of that attitude by now. He could of easily gone home for not following the rules, attitude, and lying! I love seeing the new designs and challenges each week - great show!

I WAS taken aback that dogs are considered "accessories"--though heartened to see that not all the dogs chosen were toy breeds. As a dog person (I have 2 Shelties, and would never CONSIDER putting clothes on my intelligent, athletic, beautiful dogs) I was also taken aback by Laura's comments and treatment of her dog--and that poor thing looked like she was going to be strangled in that coat they squished her into. Anyway, I have to say I immediately stopped rooting for Laura after her snotty comments about the dog. She's too arrogant by half.

I think that everyone needs to keep in mind that the more you complain about Angela, the more likely it is she'll stay. Remember Santino? No one wanted him to stay and he made it to the top.
As far as Michael Kors goes...I haven't missed him. His catty remarks aren't always constructive. I don't think this show needs a Simon Cowell. The designers need constructive criticism like Vera Wang is sharing. That's beneficial. Keep Her!

Keith should have lost for the same reason Malan lost: neither of them had a finished product. It doesn't matter if Keith's dress was designed well; he only did half of the challenge. That alone should have sent him hone, no matter how simple Katherine's dress was or how utterly heinous Angela's skirt and vest were.

Katherine likely would have been booted soon but didn't deserve to be cut this week. I give her kudos for being a little pissed. Along with Uli's dress, I would love to wear the green dress and dress a shih tzu in a hoodie. Give her a break for making something sporty, yet pretty and wearable. Maybe the dress didn't look as good in person as it did on tv? Who knows. Also Alison's outfit was overrated. Japanese? More like Star Trek/Heaven's Gate (that creepy cult) couture.

Anyone care to speculate who the mystery designer is that Tim asks to leave for violating the rules of the show????

Is it:

Austin-VINCENT-Powers for using the leggings he didn’t make?

Or Pretty Boy-KEITH for refusing to make a doggie outfit and lying to the judges about it?

Or Bad Mommy-LAURA, for who know what happened between her and Keith?

Or 80’s girl band member, look alike-ANGELA for sabotaging someone else?

It has to be some form of cheating.
What could it be?
And who is the type to cheat?

We’ve already seen Vincent and Keith lie, Laura being mean to a dog and Angela scheme and connive to stay in the game.

Hi!! I, TOO, am "crazy" abt PR and especially TIM GUNN!!!! Abt the comments abt the dogs being a "fashion accessory"---I DIDN'T take that as such an insult towards the dogs!!! The celebrities that I've read abt, who OWN such dogs, DO NOT treat them as ACCESSORIES!!! I LAUGHED SO HARD UNTIL I CRIED when I saw Tim walking over the berm w/all the sweet dogs, making ME WISH I COULD HOLD THEM ALL (AND TIM, too!!!!) I had to "put down" our family's beagle, "Sheba," a little over two years ago and I miss her STILL!!! Also, I MISS MICHAEL KORS!!! I WISH I could have seen HIS EXPRESSION w/all the dogs around the set. I feel like he's a dog lover but do not know if he owns one. (BTW, does anyone know if TIM owns a pet?) I, too, am SICKENED by the BLATANT unfairness towards certain designers, such as Michael. PLEASE "DIS" AND DUMP ANGELA before I lose more of my mind than I already have over her and a couple of the other designers!!!! Thanks for allowing me to COMMENT and to VENT!!! (BTW, I apologize for the use of the caps--my "italics" font is malfunctioning and I don't mean to yell---well, maybe I do but any case, I'm sorry if it's taken that way) Ellen

Okay, let me get this straight. PR does not keep people for their quirky personalities, but rather their skill and talent as a designer. Now, Malan was disqualified because his design more or less missed the mark according to the judges. Sniff, bye,bye Malan. (Angela did nothing for that challange besides create chaos and manipulate other designers.) Then Katherine goes because it's too bland. (Personally didn't think it was so bad, she hit the mark with the dog's costume- the judges even noted that.) Am I supposed to buy that Angela was not sent home from this challange b/c her design and vision was superior to Katherine's? I don't even remember what the dog even wore because her rainbow bright costume gave me a seizure. Anyway, maybe I need a little more explaination about why they decide to keep the bottom 3- b/c I'm not getting it. To me, yet again, it seems like PR is following a familiar recipe. Keep the conflict with a dash of outlandish design. UH! I can assure PR producers that I am not tuning in to see Angela's bad behavior, rather I am trying to block her nonsense out to better enjoy the show. Maybe we need a little more objective display of the mysterious "scores". A percentage or something. I'm starting to think the Auf'd one might be pulled out of a hat! Can't wait to see who's been naughty next week!

I LOVED this challenge, and honeslty, it was really tough to pick the winner and the loser. I realize Katherine didn't have time to make the extra hoody, but why don't more of the designers pick out some nice jewelry to jazz up outfits when they get in a jam like this? They have a wall full of accessories! Keith did it for that simple halter dress in the 1st episode, and he "made it work."

Lauren wrote:

I think this show has needled me the wrong way. Simple and un-inspired got Katherine booted "out"!! Deja vu Vincent? Why is he still here?
To me its becoming overly edited and too "slick". Be careful producers, those of us who are "older" and cynical are on to you!! Dogs as accessories? A real challange would be a DOG. How about Miss Lily my 150lb english mastiff? Now thats an accessory!!!
Teehee hahaha!

OK, let's all think seriously for a minute. Would any parent who watches PR really want their children anywhere near Angela's model? I supervise a staff of almost 100 in a program which serves about 800 children. If that poor woman came to my office for an interview, I would ask her if I could take her picture. I would then blow up to a life size portrait and use it to show staff "what not to wear"! I know NO ONE who would be caught dead or alive in that halloween get-up! I'll give PR credit; the costume was certainly good for a few laughs!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Tim, I have been watching PR since season 1. I agree with most of the previous statements. Michael is not getting any recognition at all. His designs as well as his execution have been far better than most if not all of the designers. I feel he is going to be robbed at the end of the season, as was Kara Saun in season 1. Angela is a horrid mess, where did she come from, her designs wouldn’t even make as a student here at the Art Institute in Ft. Lauderdale. Vincent is a bigger mess than she is; the poor dog should have broken loose and ran off the runway. They both need to be drug tested and physically removed from the show. If I had to choose between Alison & Uli, Alison would have won hands down. I guess the judges really can’t see that Uli makes the same dress every week. Kayne’s outfit was hot to death and definitely deserved to be in the top three. The final two for season 3, (if fairly judged) should be Michael and Kayne. Robert is good, but needs to step it up a notch. Keith in the 1st episode stated he never made women’s wear, I know that’s a lie; he’s probably the one being sent home because of fraud. Jeffrey’s outfit for the dog was really cute. Laura will be leaving soon, I don’t think America can take another coat. And how can I forget Bradley, that was as messy as Angela’s; instead of the puff skirt we had a horrible puffed shirt.

I just hope that they do not eliminate Michael because he isn’t using a Michael Kors accessory or shoe.

You know, I really like Nina as a judge - and last night she and all four ladies judging completely won my heart when they gave Bradley a gift of grace (for his birthday). You ladies are gold. His outfit was hideous. Please do not shoot it for Elle. Vera Wang is awesome as a judge - I'm like a fashion-know-nothing - but Vera Wang is like a constellation to me - her wedding gown designs strike me speechless - they are the essence of beautiful - they are like artwork - lovely to behold.

You know, I had been thinking a lot about Episode 2 and how Katherine failed Malan. She was supposed to be part of a team - and she could have had stronger influence on the design AND execution. It bothered me that she was such a coward when it came to defending Malan's design. When they pair these designers together for a challenge, sometimes I wonder if one is sabotaging the other - just trying to get rid of the competition. Maybe not - I don't know. Something to think about. Something for the judges to think about! Don't get sucked into that game! I agree with the judges on eliminating her - looking at Katherine's design compared to everyone else's (other than Angela and Vincent) - it was a very defendable decision.

The designers who were 'in' on the first pass wowed me - the good ones who were left were awesome, too. Uli tends to design for 'younger', more perfect-body types - that I ain't - and not many of my friends are either. So while it was ascetically pleasing and pretty to look at - it just isn't practical for 95% of the women in the world! But maybe haute couture isn't for the masses.

I appreciated Alison's design. It was deceptively simple - I wish I could have seen the textures closer. It also seemed like it was just a design that would translate well to a women's (a real women's - not a model's) body. I like Alison's attitude and confidence in her vision.

Gotta tell you, though - I'm a Laura fan. Her touch is elegant and simple and breath-taking, impeccable. But, like Tim says, it's really a matter of taste - what appeals to me.

Angela - I don't even want to start - there's not enough space. The one we love to hate, thus far. Go home Angela. Hard to believe she was the lesser of two evils this episode. That outfit was ridiculous - I don't care if it was well-executed or not. Sewing skills do not make a fashion designer. That's called a seamstress.

Vincent is weird. I keep hoping that as each week passes and his confidence builds - because he's not 'aufed' - that he'll deliver! But no.

Jeffrey is a prick. He's emulating Santino. But he's just not as fascinating - he's just mean-spirited - which is a shame - because he seems to be a good designer. Maybe you have to see his stuff close up to really appreciate it - cause it doesn't really have a wow factor for me. Can you imagine him winning - all we need in the world - another tyrant pumped up on their own conceit and delusions that they're better than anyone else in the world. Hope someone takes him down a peg or two or three - do the judges have that in them? Come on Nina - don't let me down - don't let Jeffrey bully you!
